Everton looks to keep its win streak going on Boxing Day when it heads to Bramall Lane to take on last-place Sheffield United.
Sheffield United fell just short of a Europa League spot last season and has fallen on extremely hard times during the 2020-21 campaign. The Blades have only two points from their first fourteen matches and look like they are heading for relegation.
Every match from here on out is a must-win for them, so a result on Saturday could give the Sheffield United faithful some hope of staying up in the Premier League.
After a poor spell of form during November, Everton is red hot in Premier League play, winning their last three matches. The Toffees are currently sitting inside the top four, so they will need a win to stay there before their date with Manchester City on Monday.
Sheffield United
After a dream first season back in the Premier League, the Blades have struggled mightily to start their campaign. They've managed to score just eight goals and have lost 12 of their first 14 matches.
However, it's not all bad news, because Sheffield has generated 14.81 xGF so far this season. So, positive regression may be coming its way very soon.
The biggest issue for Sheffield United this season has been defense. They are allowing 1.81 xG per match and have desperately struggled over their past six matches, allowing 2.17 xG per match.
With a red hot offense like Everton coming to town, their struggles are likely to continue. Despite playing out of a defensive 3-5-2 formation, Sheffield United matches have been very high scoring with 2.81 xG scored on average.
Could we see another high scoring affair on Saturday?
Everton
Everton has had a roller coaster of a season. They were on top of the league after the first five matches, but then hit skid in November, losing four out of six matches. However, the last three matches they've been on fire knocking off Chelsea, Leicester, and Arsenal.
The reason Everton is inside the top four is their ability to create a ton of high quality chances, averaging 1.61 xGF per match. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been on fire up front for the Toffees, scoring 11 goals in 14 appearances. He's averaging a ridiculous 0.73 xG per 90 minutes, the second-highest scoring rate in the league.
Everton has been a tad shaky defensively this season, allowing 1.36 xG per match, which ranks in the bottom half of the Premier League. A potent offense and a shaky defense has led to a lot of high scoring matches, as 57% of Everton matches have gone over 2.5 goals.
Projections and Pick
With two offensively talented clubs on the pitch, I think we are going to see high-scoring affair at Bramall Lane. Everton's offense alone is good enough to hit this over, but the defense is just shaky enough to allow Sheffield United plenty of high quality scoring chances.
Since I have the total projected at 3.00, I think there is some value in over 2.5 goals at -109 odds (DraftKings).
Pick: Over 2.5 goals (-109)
