Liverpool continues its quest for a Premier League title on Saturday when it rolls into Tyneside to face Newcastle United in a game sandwiched between Champions League fixtures for the global powerhouse.
The Magpies will be no easy foe as they head into this tie with four wins on the bounce, and will be looking to play spoiler in a similar situation to what they faced in 2019 when the Reds were searching for that season's crown.
In that outing, Liverpool got a late winner from Divock Origi to squeak out the victory. So, will this latest affair result into another Liverpool win or will Newcastle be able to push the heavy road favorite?
Newcastle Putting Together Solid Streak
Winning four games in a row in the EPL is usually a feat accomplished by the best teams in the league, but this Newcastle side was on the ropes at the midway point of the season.
A Saudi Arabian takeover injected money into the club in December, with Newcastle taking off since then. In fact, the Magpies are fourth in the English top flight over their last 10 games with 21 points. The only three teams ahead of them are Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.
Newcastle has earned a positive expected-goal differential in each of its four recent wins, with less than one xGA conceded in each. During that span, the Magpies have yielded just one goal. This is a team that will be competing at a high level next season, even if there isn't much to play for at the moment.
Liverpool Fighting For Historic Outcome
No English club has completed the quadruple of winning titles via Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup in one season, but Liverpool is making a major push for the feat that would instantly immortalize the club in soccer history.
As it stands, the league will be the toughest task for the Reds, as they sit at +190 odds to take home the Premier League. They're -180 to claim the FA Cup title against Chelsea and -110 to win the Champions League. Of course, Liverpool already beat Chelsea in penalties to win the EFL Cup.
This fixture is placed between Liverpool's two-legged UCL tie with Villarreal, but a 2-0 win this past Wednesday should allow manager Jürgen Klopp's team to exert a bit more energy toward another must-win league game.
Betting Analysis & Pick
I talked about Newcastle's great form earlier in this piece, but the form of this Liverpool team is simply on another level.
The Reds have won nine of their last 10 league games, maintained positive xG differentials in all of those games bar a -.05 differential on the road at Manchester City. They've also amassed positive xG differentials in each of their last three UCL contests.
This is all amidst a packed schedule that featured an FA Cup win against Man City and constant periods of two games per week.
Newcastle has excelled in recent months, but its past two games against top-five teams in Tottenham and Chelsea, the club lost each and endured an aggregated a 6-1 goal differential.
Getting Liverpool to win by two or more at plus money, I have to go back to a team playing relentlessly and with supreme execution.
Pick: Liverpool -1.5 (+120)
