Manchester City continues its quest for a second consecutive Premier League title Wednesday with a trip to Wolverhampton.
As it stands, the visiting side is level with Liverpool after the latter's 2-1 win against Aston Villa on Tuesday. However, the Cityzens are ahead on goal differential with a 3-goal edge after it routed Newcastle United last time out.
Both clubs have big goals they’re targeting, but where does the value lie in the midweek fixture? Let’s take a look.
Wolves Chasing European Qualification
The UEFA Europa Conference League isn't quite an EPL title, but qualification would feel like somewhat of a mini-title for this Wolves squad.
Wolverhampton most recently qualified for a European competition in 2019, reaching the quarterfinals of the Europa League in a COVID-altered one-leg knockout with Sevilla. Before that, Wolves hadn't played in a European competition since the 1980-81 season.
As it stands, Wolves is on the outside looking in to the Conference League position that is awarded to the seventh-placed Premier League finisher. However, with 50 points and a game in hand, Wolves is within legitimate reach of West Ham United. And if it wasn't to get really ambitious, United has played two more games and is eight points ahead.
It'll take a big effort to qualify for either of those positions considering the uphill nature of this match, but in this league any team is capable of achieving a result on any given day.
Man City Going Forward With Singular Focus
The Cityzens took care on business this past weekend when Liverpool dropped points to Tottenham and they now have a chance to build their lead back to three points.
Despite the devastating Champions League result the team suffered against Real Madrid, City's league form has been consistent as it has won four of six games and hasn't lost since the middle of February.
It hasn't conceded an expected-goal deficit in a game since the October loss that was dealt by Crystal Palace.
Simply put, City is putting together another incredible closing run to an EPL season and it would be a big shock to see it drop points in the final three games of the campaign.
Betting Analysis & Pick
City faced a similar situation in a sprint to the finish against Liverpool in 2019nand there's not much reason to believe we'll see something different in this title race.
Man City has a bit more of a buffer this time around, but with no UCL or FA Cup to compete in, it'll be very simple for manager Pep Guardiola to rally his men around the goal of finishing off this job.
With a 1.51 xG/game difference away from Etihad Stadium, City is the best road squad in the Premier League by some margin. On the flip side, Wolves is a poor home side, amassing a -0.33 xG/game difference at Molineux Stadium.
That said, look for Manchester City to continue its recent run of Premier League form with a decisive victory as the finish line nears.
Pick: Man City -1.5 (-130)
