After falling short to Manchester United in their last match and with their dreadful 6-0 loss to Brighton still in recent memory, Julen Lopetegui’s Wolverhampton Wolves will want a win against Everton – especially since they’ll expect a very challenging match against Arsenal to conclude their season.
Everton are just one point clear of the relegation zone, but they are -470 (implied probability 82.5%) to finish above the bottom three. That’s for good reason.
After Wolves, Everton have another winnable match against Bournemouth (14th). Leeds United and Leicester City, the two teams hoping to swap their bottom-three status with Everton, both play one of their final two games against a top-seven side. As indicated by the odds, Vegas seems to feel pretty confident that Everton can squeeze out some points – at least as many as Leeds and Leicester – in these final two rounds.
Wolves Cruising to End of Season
Wolves spent a lot of the first half of the season in the relegation zone, but thanks to Rui Lopetegui, Wolves managed to turn the ship around and secure their spot in the EPL for next year. As of late, they’ve been especially strong at home, winning all four of their last matches at the Molineux.
Wolverhampton fans will head into this match expecting a result after their recent home success and winning their last three battles against the Toffees.
Wolves will miss a few players for this fixture. Both Sasa Kalajdzic and Chiquinho, who suffered ligament injuries, will not make their return against Everton. Boubacar Traore is doubtful to play in tomorrow’s match.
Everton Looking to Secure Safety
After spending almost the entire season in or around the relegation zone, Everton are well positioned to secure their spot in the top flight of English football for next season. Avoiding relegation will constitute a success for the Toffees this year.
They’d be elated to grab three points in this match, but are not desperate for all three. I don’t think that we’ll see Everton throw numbers forward, compromising an opportunity to secure one point in an effort to gain three. Rather, I expect to see more poised, compact football, relative to some of the recent EPL relegation battles.
Wolves vs Everton Pick
It’s been the trend to take the over in Premier League games with teams fighting to avoid relegation, but this game is a little bit different. While Everton have seen over 2.5 goals in their past four games, only eight those were scored by the Toffees, and five of those were seen in one match where Everton threw attackers forward in a Hail Mary display against Brighton.
Now that they’re one point clear of the relegation zone with two winnable games in hand, I don’t expect to see Everton implement similar tactics.
Meanwhile, Wolves have seen over 2.5 goals only once in their past four games. Furthermore, Wolves have kept a clean sheet in their past four home games, none of which have seen over 2.5 goals.
After the first goal, expect this game to get even more compact and less opportunities to arise. If Wolves score first, they’ve proven that they can shut down the opposing attack in their home stadium. If Everton score first, they will get all numbers behind the ball to ensure they earn points in this match.
Lastly, both teams are terrible at scoring – Wolves rank last in goals scored per match (0.8) and Everton 18th (0.9). I’m taking the under 2.25 at -105.
