PSG Prediction

After a bad start to life in the UEFA Champions League, PSG found it's stride in the second half of the league phase. Luis Enrique's team picked up just four points in their first five fixtures, then won three on the bounce, including an iconic victory over Manchester City.

Still, that was only good enough for 15th place in the league phase, so the reigning French champions had to go through the playoffs, where they earned a 10-0 aggregate win over Brest to secure their spot in the Round of 16.

Forward Ousmane Dembele is finally showing the type of form many predicted of him when he first burst onto the scene with Borussia Dortmund. His 26 goals and six assists through 33 games across all competitions have him tied for the sixth-most across Europe's top five leagues.

Now, on a five-game win streak in the Champions League, with 21 goals scored and just three conceded, PSG has reclaimed their candidate title.

Liverpool Prediction

Liverpool is in a strange position for a Premier League-leading side. The English top flight, traditionally an obstacle for teams looking to contend in Europe due to its dynamic, tightly contested nature, seems all but wrapped up as the Reds are an almost absurd 13 points clear of second place Arsenal.

Still, Arne Slot's team would do well not to take their foot off the gas. Last month, they crashed out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle, securing another year without a potential treble. Draws against Everton and Aston Villa opened the door to a league challenge by Arsenal, one the Gunners kindly shut down on their own.

Yet, for all of their candidate flair, PSG away will be a stern test for the Reds. Liverpool has won just one of its past four road Champions League matches. Their record in France is even worse as they are winless in their past five away games against French teams. Their last victory came at Marseille in September 2008.

At least Slot will have a nearly full-strength team. Alarms went out as forward Cody Gakpo missed training ahead of the game, but only Joe Gomez (hamstring), Tyler Morton (shoulder) and Conor Bradley (muscle) are confirmed as out.

PSG vs. Liverpool Pick

Incredibly, for two household names in European football, this will be only the third time Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain meet in the UEFA Champions League. Their last face-off came in the 2018-19 group stages, with a 3-2 home win for Liverpool and a 2-1 revenge win for PSG.

The series is as open as any in this year's knockout stage. While both may be breezing past their domestic competition, it'll be a different story here.

Both know that regardless of what happens in this first game, there'll be a lot of football left to be played, so neither will want to get to the second leg in a desperation spot. Thus, I expect a cautious game from both managers and am backing the under at 2.5 goals.

If you push me to pick a winner, I'd say that Enrique's team has much less use for a draw, while Liverpool can hold out to settle the series at Anfield. So, advantage PSG, but with a series as close as this one, it's no gimme.

PSG vs. Liverpool Pick: Under 2.5 Goals
