After two defeats, Vietnam have already been eliminated from their first-ever World Cup, but they could play the role of spoiler if they can avoid defeat against Netherlands.
On match day 3, the Dutch need at least a draw to guarantee a spot in the round of 16. The Oranje can still clinch top spot in Group E if they better the USA's result or if they win by two or more goals than the Americans do against Portugal.
With both of Group E's final matches kicking off at the same time, attention will be flicking between this match at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, and the USA vs Portugal at Eden Park in Auckland.
Vietnam Chasing Big Goal
The Southeast Asian country has been rather stoic in this tournament so far. Head coach Mai Duc Chung's defensive tactics have partly worked against the USA and Portugal.
Considering the talent divide, Vietnam have hustled to close down space and clear their lines in order to avoid losing by too many goals. The Golden Star Warriors have used a 5-4-1 formation to successfully limit the damage.
A 3-0 defeat to the Americans and a 2-0 slip to the Europeans isn't too shabby. Vietnam currently have a positive goals minus post-shot xG against of +4.4 – a significant reduction from their second-highest ranking post-shot xG against of 9.4.
Chung was honest before the competition started when he said that just scoring one goal at the World Cup was the aim for his team.
On Tuesday, it will be a historic moment if Vietnam can score their first-ever World Cup goal. With the odds at +300 for both teams to score, it's unlikely but not too far fetched. Their most likely scorer, Nhu Huynh, is at +1100 to score anytime.
Netherlands Cruising Despite Flaws
It's almost job done for Holland. At -4000 to win, the idea of the Oranje not winning this match seems almost impossible to contemplate.
The real question is how many goals will Netherlands win by and how long will they keep starters in?
Holland need to rack up the goals against Vietnam so they can put themselves in a position to finish top of Group E, above the United States.
However, the goals haven't necessarily been flowing. With two goals in two games, Netherlands rank a middling 16th for goals scored.
Things are similar for xG and total shots, where the Dutch rank 17th and 25th. What those statistics do tell us is that while Netherlands aren't creating many attempts, those chances are on average better than some other teams out in Australia and New Zealand.
From outside the box, Jill Roord scored Holland's only shot on target of the match against the USA. Netherlands will need to create much more to get a big win against Vietnam.
And to do that, they'll need width to make the pitch bigger. Dutch wing-backs Esmee Brugts and Victoria Pelova have been arguably Holland's best two players at the World Cup so far. The Vietnam match is a good platform for them to sharpen their attacking skills.
In the front line, forward Lineth Beerensteyn was the only Dutch starter from match day one to not start on match day two. She's known for her speed and ability to cut in from wide areas. Andries Jonker could keep rotating his forwards to give some different looks.
Vietnam vs Netherlands Pick
As much as most soccer fans would love to see it, the idea of Vietnam scoring against a pretty well-organized Netherlands backline seems unlikely. Holland should win this one and secure a clean sheet.
Vietnam haven't let anyone run them over yet though, and the Dutch will have an eye on resting players. So, don't expect a big scoreline in this one.
Over the past week, we've seen a lot of set piece goals at this tournament. That could be where Holland can break the deadlock. Stefanie van der Gragt could be a fun outside tip to head in a corner.
Picks: Netherlands 2-0 (+700), Stefanie van der Gragt to score first/anytime (+1400 / +300)
