Fulham vs. Leicester City looks like a mismatch on paper.
Leicester City is currently in fourth place in the Premier League, challenging for a Champions League spot and maybe even the title. Fulham is 18th and battling to avoid relegation.
However, this game is a little trickier than the table suggests.
Fulham
Fulham have won only two of their 20 league matches so far this season, and are currently seven points from safety. That’s the bad news.
The good news is they won 2-1 at Leicester City back on Nov. 30. And although Fulham haven’t won any of their 10 matches since, seven of them finished as draws.
That win over Leicester wasn’t a fluke, either — Fulham doubled them up in terms of expected goals, 1.8-0.9. Ademola Lookman and Ivan Cavaleiro scored for Fulham (Cavaleiro’s was a penalty), while Harvey Barnes struck late for Leicester.
Fulham’s only three losses since beating Leicester came against Manchester City (2-0), Chelsea (1-0) and Manchester United (2-1) — three narrow defeats against three of the traditional “Big Six” clubs.
Leicester City
Leicester City responded well to that loss to Fulham in late November, following it up with six wins and two draws in their next nine matches. But they’re coming off a 3-1 defeat at home to Leeds United on Sunday, which was preceded by a 1-1 draw at Everton.
It’s probably not a coincidence that Leicester was without star forward Jamie Vardy for those two matches, and he remains out due to injury.
Vardy is Leicester’s leading scorer this season, with 11 league goals. No one else has more than seven. And they have no one who can come anywhere close to filling Vardy’s boots. Ayoze Pérez started at center forward the past two games, and has just one goal in 747 league minutes this season.
Betting Analysis & Picks
I like Fulham’s chances of getting at least a point out of this match. But I wish we could get better than around +300 on the win, given the two teams’ disparate positions in the table.
Instead, I’ll take Fulham to either win or draw. After all, they already have eight draws this season — only Brighton have more (nine). That includes a 0-0 at Brighton last week, followed by a 2-2 at West Brom in which Fulham were much the better side, winning the xG battle 1.8 to 0.6.
