Two players look to capitalize on a massive opportunity to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal when Alex de Minaur takes on Cristian Garin.
With both players finding their way through the third round without too much trouble, who will give way in the fourth round?
Let’s dive in.
Garin Making A Surprising Run
Out of all the tournaments Garin has played this year, Wimbledon likely would have been the last one people expected him to make a run in. The clay court expert has found some form on grass after a horrendous clay season.
Given this run likely would not have happened had Matteo Berrettini not tested positive for COVID, Garin has made the most out of this opportunity. The Chilean was slated to face Berrettini in round 1 before he pulled out.
Garin handled a tough opponent in Jenson Brooksby who was appearing to have found his stride. He dismissed of him in four sets after dominating the opening two.
Bringing his aggressive clay court tennis and phenomenal drop shots to the grass courts, the transition has gone quite well.
Last round he was able to expose Brooksby’s weak net game and punish his serves as he held Brooksby to only a 57% win percentage behind his first serve.
Despite all his troubles this year and even hinting at retirement, Garin has put together an impressive run and will look to extend on it against the in-form de Minaur.
De Minaur Winning British Hearts
Alex de Minaur has gotten past two Brits in the last two rounds. Contrary to the usual situation, he has found a solid reception from the home fans despite taking out their countrymen.
With assistance from his relationship with British player Katie Boulter, the fans will likely be behind the Australian tomorrow.
De Minaur plays highlight reel tennis, so it’s hard not to cheer for the electric Australian.
His counterpunching and ability to flip defense into offense has caused his opponents all sorts of issues. It's seemingly impossible to hit through de Minaur, and he tests the patience of his opponents, often causing them to push too hard and aim with too narrow of margins.
Will he be able to put the same doubts in Garin’s mind?
Betting Value
I don’t see a way that Garin can damage de Minaur. Although Garin plays on the front foot well, de Minaur’s speed and defense are just too strong.
De Minaur also possesses a much better net game than Brooksby as well as tremendous speed to reach Garin’s drop shots with plenty of time.
Garin would have to find a new gear and another strategy to make an impact in this match.
I don’t see it happening.
