Carlos Alcaraz and Tallon Griekspoor face off in the second round of Wimbledon despite coming from quite different situations.
Alcaraz is the World No. 7 but is attempting to settle into what is his first true grass court season, though this is the only grass event he's playing.
Meanwhile, Griekspoor is ranked much lower at 53, but he has already found a rhythm and feel on these courts after playing a full grass slate.
How will raw ability pair with likeness to the surface?
Let’s dive in.
Alcaraz Struggling To Find Footing On Grass
Alcaraz did not play an ATP grass court tournament leading up to Wimbledon, but opted to play two exhibition matches at the Hurlingham Classic.
His results there were subpar to say the least.
Failing to take a set off of clay court specialist Casper Ruud and American Francis Tiafoe, Alcaraz has not found his grass-court play style thus far.
When watching him on hard and clay courts, his movement is mesmerizing. With speed reminding us of a young Nadal, Alcaraz makes plays most other players can only dream of.
However, on grass courts, the movement is so different in addition to the shot timing, and he has been unable to settle in.
Griekspoor Enjoying Grass Season
Griekspoor has totaled up a 6-3 record on grass this year and pushed top opponents to the brink.
Taking a set off Roberto Bautista Agut and pushing Felix Auger-Aliassime to a 6-7 6-7 score line, the Dutchman has hung with all the competition that he's had to face.
He has found great combinations of shots on serve producing consistent and potent damage with a forehand that is able to quickly apply pressure behind.
Betting Value
With Griekspoor finding ways to be aggressive, this may expose Alcaraz’s subpar movement on the surface.
Although Alcaraz is the more talented player, Griekspoor’s style and comfort on grass with surely cause him problems. If the Dutchman can be aggressive and consistent behind his serve-plus-one and carve out a rhythm, Alcaraz could face some danger.
I believe Griekspoor is bound to grab a set off Alcaraz, but Alcaraz will find ways to push ahead with his electrifying skill. It's hard to find the Griekspoor moneyline as attractive at a short +250, so I'll look to the total instead.
I’ll back the lower-ranked player to extend the match with a top-10 opponent.
