The first final of the US Open is upon us. 18-year-old Emma Raducanu will face off with newly turned 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez in the biggest underdog final in open era grand slam history.
Raducanu came into the tournament with odds that ranged from +8000 to +15000 and would become the first qualifier in tennis history to win a slam title. Fernandez came into the event ranging from +20000 to +30000 and is looking to be the biggest underdog (odds-wise) to win a grand slam event.
It's an unprecedented situation for the sport, and a landmark piece of history will be made no matter who takes home the crown.
The Brit's road to the final has only included two seeded players in the main draw. Raducanu had to come through qualifying, where she won three matches in straight sets to advance through to the main draw. It's been the same story there as she hasn't dropped a set and has battled players such as Belinda Bencic, Maria Sakkari and Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Fernandez came in to the main draw without having to progress through the qualifying draw, but she's had to endure one of the most difficult paths in US Open history. The Canadian has gotten through three top-10 players en route to the final, overcoming Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka. Fernandez also secured impressive wins against Angelique Kerber, Ana Konjuh and Kaia Kanepi.
The match will pit two players that have absolutely lit the tournament up, though they've gone about it in different ways, but only one can take home the crown and a piece of history.
