As the number of matches dwindles and the players remaining are more well known, beating the market in Grand Slams can become tougher and tougher.
Our first breakdown from the Thursday women's semifinals at the French Open is Iga Swiatek vs Coco Gauff in my French Open semifinal preview.
Let's get into the match.
Swiatek Dominating Roland Garros Once Again
At this point, what can be said against Swiatek? Even the most casual fans understand her dominance on clay. When there is no altitude and the courts have a decent layer of dirt on them and play slowly, there is almost no stopping her.
Other than Naomi Osaka — who has never been past the third round in Paris — who played low margin and powerful tennis, no one has come close to upsetting the world No. 1. What's more scary for her opponents is she's only gotten better as the tournament has progressed. Swiatek has dropped a total of four games in her last five sets entering this tilt with the American and one has to wonder how likely Gauff is to push this iteration of Swiatek.
Gauff Looking to Improve on Rome Showing
This matchup has been an absolute nightmare for Gauff. She's only beaten her on home soil on the fast courts of Cincinnati on a day she faced twice as many break points as the Pole but actually managed to break three times to Swiatek's four.
Last month in Rome, Gauff put in what was probably her second or third-most competitive showing against her nemesis, and even that ended up in a five game loss and once more featured a disparity in break point conversion rates.
Put simply, she's overmatched in matches between the two young stars and when you slow conditions down like this, the gulf between them only seems to widen.
Barring a performance on serve we rarely see or another stroke of good fortune with the break point conversion rates, there isn't much to suggest that this encounter will end differently.
Swiatek vs Gauff Prediction
Whether it's Swiatek growing into the tournament, her elite return abilities against an unreliable server or her punishing topspin and surface edge, there's nothing to make me believe this spread shouldn't be either 6.5 or 7 games.
Yet we see market leaders at -6 without much juice, which is enough for me to pull the trigger on a bet on yet another favorite. If there was ever one to rely on though, it's the world No. 1 on her best surface.
