A quarterfinal that few predicted awaits us on Tuesday.
Cristian Garin battled back from two sets down to find his way to victory in a fifth-set tiebreak marathon.
After surviving a tiebreak in the third set and saving two match points in the fifth, Garin has earned his spot in his maiden grand slam quarterfinal.
Nick Kyrgios battled through the young American Brandon Nakashima in five sets as well, fighting through an apparent shoulder injury.
Even with his injury, Kyrgios fired 35 aces to only three double faults, and he backed that up with 79 total winners and only 42 unforced errors. He has now arrived in his third grand slam quarterfinal and first since 2015.
As both players arrive following grueling wins, who will advance to their first Slam semifinal?
Let's dive in.
Kyrgios Showing His Potential
Following his heated match against Tsitsipas, Kyrgios looked as focused as ever in his fourth-round match. Early on, Kyrgios made it known that he was battling through a shoulder injury but proceeded to show very little weakness in his game.
Kyrgios has been locked in as of late. In the first round he survived a five-set battle against wild card Paul Jubb, and since then he's proved he's a true top grass-courter.
He has always been one for the big stage and even bigger moments, entertaining the crowd and rarely showing signs of nerves. So, can he maintain his focus in a match he is the heavy favorite in?
With life-altering news on the horizon, things will not be easy for the controversial Kyrgios. He has found himself in the early stages of an assault allegation, so he could walk onto the court tomorrow with a lot weighing on his mind.
Garin Providing Another Shocker
Garin has found another astonishing victory. Finding his way back from the brink of defeat, Garin closed the door on an all-Aussie quarterfinal.
Backing himself by way of excellent drop shots and aggressive groundstrokes that are much flatter than the usual clay-courters, he has impressed once again at Wimbledon.
Garin will need to raise his level if he wants to find his way through the toughest opponent he has faced so far in this tournament.
He has done it when he has needed to so far, but can he do it once more?
Betting Value
Kyrgios is the more talented player with a much higher ceiling. However, his focus is always in question. Kyrgios' serve – when firing – will be too much for Garin and break points will be tough to come by for the Chilean.
However, with Kyrgios' mentality already consistently on edge, going to play a match with looming legal issues definitely will not improve the situation.
When Kyrgios is not locked in, dropping a set is in sight against any sort of opponent. With Garin surging and high on confidence following a disappointing start to the year, I expect him to make his move, capitalizing on any sort of distraction Kyrgios faces tomorrow.
Even with everything going on, Kyrgios' raw skill should be enough to find him through to the semifinals. But I trust Garin to extend this match.
Pick: Garin +2.5 sets (-140 via DraftKings)
