Talk about a match to get up for early on a Monday morning from the French Open!
Former Roland Garrros champion Stan Wawrinka will take the court against the ever-entertaining Corentin Moutet. With the way the crowds were for the French players on day one, expect the atmosphere to be incredible as well.
In terms of the stylistic matchup between these two, fans should be treated to a real clash.
Wawrinka will be looking use the pace and heaviness of his groundstrokes in an attempt to dictate points.
The smaller Moutet is more of a counter-punching baseline grinder that will be looking to stick around in rallies, until he finds his opening to either hit back at the Swiss using his own pace, or until there is enough open space to push the ball through.
It's also worth noting that in a best-of-five-set setting, each man has question marks surrounding them.
First, can Wawrinka last physically over the course of a long match? He's just five matches back from an injury-related absence. Best-of-five might be tough in its own right, without factoring in that his opponent is someone looking to prolong points.
On the flip side, Moutet is sure to have the crowd on his side. He also has the endurance and physicality to outlast Wawrinka if this match goes four or five.
However, his mental game has always been a problem. It's not so much flopping in clutch situations, but rather his anger issues and tendency to let small things snowball and affect his game. Obviously, in a longer match, there is more opportunity and time for something like that to occur.
Betting Value
When it comes down to the best way to approach betting the match, it's tough to overlook Wawrinka not having enough matches under his belt to back him as a favorite in this situation.
Sure, he's shown in the past he's more than capable of hitting through the slower conditions here, but it's 2022. He's older, still building up to his top form and going to be in really tough against someone like Moutet.
The Lausanne native's form isn't anything to write home about either. His loss to Elias Ymer in his very first match back is excusable. A loss from a set up to Bublik on clay is rough, and even though he won a pair of matches in Rome, he was shellacked by Novak Djokovic.
A win over Reilly Opelka was also an advantageous matchup. Slower clay was certainly beneficial, as were the shorter points against someone who is serve-oriented, to say the least.
Wins against Laslo Djere and Opelka aren't quite enough to make him the clear favorite in this matchup. If this were lined closer to a pick 'em, there wouldn't be nearly as much value here.
If Moutet can force Wawrinka into a long first or second set with plenty of a long rallies, he'll have him exactly where he wants him from the third set onwards.
Not only will the "Stanimal" be forced to play with less margin for error in his game, but with his legs tiring, the errors could come in a fast and furious way.
Considering the styles and surface here, along with the crowd likely to be on the side of their compatriot and the best-of-five format, taking the plus money would be a wise decision.
Pick: Corentin Moutet +122
