The USFL season ends today with the Stallions and Stars playing for the first-ever USFL Championship.
Birmingham put to rest any doubts about whether or not it would perform worse without home field advantage last week, as it captured a 31-17 victory over the New Orleans Breakers.
Birmingham comes into this game as the likely favorite to boast the trophy. Led by standout quarterback J’Mar Smith, the Stallions have only lost one game all season.
Smith finished the USFL regular season with 1,572 passing yards and 10 passing touchdowns, both third in the league. Smith is ultimately the key to this highly-efficient Stallions offense, which averaged 23.4 points per game in the regular season.
Defensively, Birmingham was second in efficiency and points allowed, and first in yards allowed in the regular season. The Stallions were fourth in turnover margin, as well.
Birmingham has not allowed an opposing team to score more than 18 total points in a game since Week 2, which was in April.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia is coming off a semifinal upset over the New Jersey Generals last week, winning 19-14.
Led by quarterback Case Cookus, the Stars have managed to win five of their last six games, averaging a whopping 29.16 points per game.
The issue with this Stars team has been their defense. Philadelphia had the league's worst defense in the regular season. The Stars allowed a league worst 343.2 yards per game and 24.3 points per game.
Essentially, they could not stop opposing offenses for the entire season, which is interesting because they led the USFL in turnover margin (+8) and finished the season with 13 total interceptions.
Philadelphia will have its work cut out for it in this game. Birmingham is the better team, and it will either take an offensive barrage or a Stallions collapse for the Stars to win this game.
Birmingham has the better quarterback, defense and coach. Barring a meltdown performance from Smith, I think Birmingham wins this game.
Birmingham won this matchup 30-17 in Week 5, and we could definitely see a similar final score in this game.
The Stallions have been one of the most profitable teams to bet on this season, and I think we ride with them one last time to end the USFL season.
Pick: Birmingham Stallions -4.5
