WNBA Best Bets Tonight: Spread Picks, Player Props, Odds

There are two games scheduled in the WNBA today, with Dream vs. Sun set to tip off the action at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by Sparks vs. Mercury at 10:00 p.m. ET.

Our experts have locked in five bets for Friday's slate, featuring a team prop for Atlanta-Connecticut, a spread pick for for Los Angeles-Phoenix, plus a trio of player props for the latter of the two matchups.

Dream Under 72.5 Total Points (-125)

The Sun beat the Dream 69-50 on June 2. Rhyne Howard is out, that's basically 15 points per game and over 12.5 shots and one of the Dream's better creators.

They've struggled mightily on the floor since her injury and the Sun, coming off an overtime win, are likely going to dictate a low scoring affair on the second of a back to back.

The Sun have held eight of their last 12 opponents under 72.5 points.

They still have the best defense in the league and are playing an overmatched team. This one isn't a tough one for me barring outlier shooting.

Rickea Jackson Under 10.5 Points (+100)

The Los Angeles Sparks travel to Phoenix to take on the Mercury Friday night, looking to break a six-game losing streak.

However, it likely won't be their remaining healthy rookie, Rickea Jackson, leading them to that goal. Jackson has cleared this 10.5 total in only six of her 17 games this season, and has actually seen her minutes decrease in recent games.

After playing 34 minutes against the Dream on June 16, she played 25 minutes against the Sun, 21 minutes against the Liberty, and then just 16 minutes in their rematch against New York in the Sparks' most recent outing.

Even projecting Jackson for her season average 23 minutes, I have this as a notable edge to the under. I'd play to under 9.5 at even money.

Brittney Griner Over 18.5 Points (-140)

Griner has been a monster since her debut this season while averaging 19.5 points per game. However, both of her unders (11 & 10) came against the Lynx, who not only play at the league’s slowest pace, but also have the league’s best defense.

The 11-point outing was her season debut, and she played just 21 minutes. In her other games, she posted point totals of 24, 25, 28, and 29.

Here, Griner gets a matchup against the Sparks who have the third-worst defense, which is now only worse without Cameron Brink (ACL).

In their two games without Brink, they were lit up on the interior by Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart.

I’ll back Griner to perform tonight against a Sparks team whose defense is reeling without their star rookie.

Diana Taurasi Over 3.5 Assists (+100)

Griner also has excellent rapport with Diana Taurasi.

Taurasi has now played six games with Griner, and aside from her first outing of the season, has recorded 4+ assists in five straight games compared to never exceeding two prior to her season debut.

These results extend back to last season, as well as over the last two years, as she's averaged 4.8 assists when playing alongside of Griner.

I’d play Taurasi assists as a straight bet at +100, but a same game parlay of Griner 20+ points combined with Taurasi 4+ assists (+246, DraftKings) is also a nice option.

Sparks +10.5 (-110)

The Sparks have lost six in a row and are dealing with key injuries. Their excellent rookie center, Cameron Brink, is out for the season and rotation guard Lexi Brown will miss the game. 

But laying this many points with the Mercury is a bridge too far. Phoenix is 8-8. Only once have the Mercury beaten an opponent by more than 10 points. 

Los Angeles is well-coached by Curt Miller, who twice has been named WNBA Coach of the Year. The Sparks have had nearly a week to rest and prepare for this game. They've played extremely tough opponents in five of their last six games going against the Liberty twice, Sun, Lynx and Storm. All on the road and in a span of 11 days. Those four teams have a combined record of 53-16. 

The Sparks' defense has gone downhill without Brink, an excellent defensive center. But LA still has Dearica Hamby, one of the better all-around players in the league.

Rickea Jackson is one of the top rookies. She's been overshadowed by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, so you don't hear that much about her. Backup center Li Yueru has been drawing more minutes and displaying potential. 

The Mercury are the second-worst shooting team in the league and rank ninth out of 12 teams defensively. The Mercury also will be hosting Clark and the Fever on Sunday in a rare nationally televised game for them.

So this is a look-ahead spot for Phoenix, which isn't good enough to cover this number without playing at a high level.
