WNBA Same Game Parlay for Aces vs Liberty Game 1 on Sunday, September 29 article feature image

A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces take on Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty in what should be a superb WNBA Playoff series. The opener tips off this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

Wilson is the undisputed best player and top scorer in the league, but New York should construct serious roadblocks. Their defense held opponents to the lowest field goal percentage inside the paint and at the rim this regular season, and they have plenty of interior size to throw at the MVP.

Now, Wilson will still post huge numbers, but New York can at least deny possessions and encourage others to step up. That’s where Kesley Plum enters the equation.

She’s a knockdown shooter who has the chops to take advantage of the Liberty’s occasionally poor 3-point defense. Plus, Sabrina Ionescu isn’t exactly the most consistent off-ball chaser or point-of-attack obstacle, which bodes well for Plum’s scoring.

With New York preoccupied trying to limit Wilson, I expect Plum to get great shot quality in Game 1.

Here are Plum’s stats in three matchups against the Liberty this year:

  • 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting
  • 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting
  • 25 points on 7-of-17 shooting

It’s worth noting that she scored 15+ points in 24-of-28 games this season when she saw 13+ field goal attempts.

Although the Aces have looked a bit off this season, they are still the reigning back-to-back champs with absurdly talented star power. It should be a close matchup, but New York is on another level this year.

The Liberty led the league in wins and net rating. Opponents produced the lowest offensive rebound rate and free throw attempt rate. New York simply doesn’t make game-altering mistakes, so the Aces will have to actually outplay them.

That’s a tough mission. Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart are an imposing interior defensive duo and viable options versus Wilson. New York’s bench is deeper, and they have a ton of lineup versatility at their disposal.

Essentially, Las Vegas owns Mike Tyson’s punching power, yet the Liberty are the complete package like Muhammad Ali. Factor in home-court advantage, and look for New York to take Game 1.
