The highly-anticipated debut of top MLB prospect Adley Rutschman has arrived.
The Baltimore Orioles announced on Saturday Rutschman would join the team and start at catcher for the matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Rutschman, 24, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft. In 68 minor league at-bats this year, he's hitting .309 with a .942 OPS and three home runs.
The call-up could've happened sooner, but his debut was delayed when he suffered an injury before the season.
The hype is real for the catcher, who enters play Saturday as a consensus top-five prospect in the game.
He was Baseball America's No. 1 overall prospect for 2022 and second at both Baseball Prospectus and MLB Pipeline. Since being drafted in 2019, none of the three publications have ranked him lower than fifth overall.
With three months and change remaining, Rutschman can still make a case to win American League Rookie of the Year. Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena is the favorite now, with Julio Rodriguez and Bobby Witt Jr. among those close behind.
If betting Rutschman, it's important to shop for the best line. He's as short as +1200 at Caesars, but bettors can find +2000 hanging at PointsBet and BetMGM.
Rutschman is the latest first-round pick from the 2019 draft to make his debut. Early returns are showing a loaded draft class.
Andrew Vaughn (third overall) was the first player to debut from the class and has played in the most games thus far. No. 2 Overall pick Bobby Witt Jr. made the Royals Opening Day roster this season.
Other first-round picks to play in the majors are C.J. Abrams (6th), Nick Lodolo (7th), Alek Manoah (11th), Bryson Stott (14th) and George Kirby (20th).
JJ Bleday and Riley Greene were the other top-five picks in the class. Neither player figures to be all that far behind.
