The New York Yankees host the Arizona Diamondbacks for the series opener of this interleague series on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch from Yankee Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET; the game will be broadcast on TBS.
The Yankees are flying high entering Tuesday following a three-game sweep of the Brewers in which they scored 36 runs. They welcome a Diamondbacks team coming off a series split with the Cubs. Tony Sartori’s Diamondbacks vs Yankees Preview
Right-hander Corbin Burnes is set to make his Diamondbacks debut. He is one of the best pitchers in the league, but his anticipated debut was put on hold for a week because he has a meticulous routine to prep for opponents that was not feasible for Opening Day.
That said, Burnes figures to be this team's ace moving forward. That is not a knock on Zac Gallen, but rather an affirmation of Burnes’ dominance.
Through 32 starts last season, Burnes posted a 15-9 record with a 2.92 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He ranked in the top quarter of the league in xERA, average exit velocity, walk rate and hard-hit rate.
That success is likely to continue against the Yankees, a team Burnes had pitched to a 1.42 ERA against over three meetings.
Meanwhile, New York will hand the ball to its fifth-best prospect, right-hander Will Warren. While the outlook for Warren remains high, his results at this level remain far from encouraging.
Warren made six MLB appearances in 2024, the vast majority of which did not go well. He posted a 0-3 record with a 10.32 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP.
Although it’s a small sample size, Warren’s underlying metrics are troubling. If he officially qualified, Warren would have ranked in the bottom half of the league in xERA, xBA, average exit velocity, walk rate, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.
Following Warren is a volatile bullpen. Last season, the Yankees’ relief staff finished in the bottom half of the league in both FIP and WAR.
Diamondbacks vs Yankees Prediction, Betting Analysis
The pitching advantage clearly goes to Arizona, which just leaves the hitting. Although New York likely holds a slight edge in this category, the D-backs have fared well at the plate thus far in 2025.
Both teams rank in the top two in runs per game, hits per game, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. If the hitting differential is minimal, then Arizona is the team to back with the massive pitching edge.
Pick: Diamondbacks ML (-110 | Play to -115)
Moneyline
As mentioned, I'm betting the Diamondbacks moneyline down to -115.
Run Line (Spread)
I also like the Diamondbacks to cover the spread, but I don't think the +146 return on them to win by two or more runs is enough to justify passing on a pick 'em moneyline.
Over/Under
I lean toward Under 8.5 at -122, considering the upside of both Burnes and Warren.
With that said, I would rather just back Arizona at -110.
