This article contains predictions for an old game.

The New York Yankees host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, April 2. First pitch from Yankee Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video.

Game 2 of an exciting interleague series between the Diamondbacks and Yankees will feature a quality pitching matchup as Arizona's Zac Gallen is set to take on New York's Carlos Rodon. Gallen will be looking to bounce back after an ugly start on Opening Day against the Chicago Cubs, while Rodon enters off an excellent outing that resulted in a win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Diamondbacks Betting Preview: Can Snakes Keep It Up?

Diamondbacks Starting Lineup

  1. Ketel Marte 2B
  2. Corbin Carroll RF
  3. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. LF
  4. Randal Grichuk DH
  5. Josh Naylor 1B
  6. Eugenio Suárez 3B
  7. Gabriel Moreno C
  8. Jake McCarthy CF
  9. Geraldo Perdomo SS
  • Starting Pitcher: Zac Gallen

No team in baseball scored more runs in 2024 than the Diamondbacks, who averaged 5.47 runs per game. Part of that comes down to the highly favorable run-scoring environment provided by Chase Field, but the D-backs were still right at the top of baseball in all other major batting categories.

Arizona ranked third in baseball with a wRC+ of 115 in 2024 and held the second-best wRC+ mark against left-handed pitching at 119. It finished second in OPS versus lefties and struck out only 20.3% of the time.

It seems entirely reasonable to think the Diamondbacks' lineup will be comparably potent this season.

Corbin Carroll appears poised for a monster campaign at age 24 after figuring out his swing during a tremendous second half in 2024. He's off to a solid start this season, slugging .526 with an OPS of .917 in his first five games this season.

Gabriel Moreno also has the potential to be one of the more productive catchers in baseball, as he's already one of the most intelligent batters in the league at the plate. He holds a .417 average and .500 OBP early in the season and looks likely to live up to his offseason expectations.

Christian Walker is the only notable loss from the Diamondbacks' lineup, but Josh Naylor should be able to come close to replicating Walker's production. Naylor holds an OPS of .899 so far this season and has struck out just once in 22 PAs.

On the bump, Gallen wasn't effective on Opening Day, handing out four walks and allowing four earned runs in only four innings of work. He held an xERA of 7.86, and perhaps most concerningly, his stuff graded out quite poorly with a Stuff+ rating of only 86.

For a pitcher with Gallen's resume, it could be foolish to put much stock into one start. However, there wasn't cause for optimism surrounding his first start of the season.

Yankees Betting Preview: Bronx Bombers

Yankees Starting Lineup

  1. Paul Goldschmidt 1B
  2. Cody Bellinger CF
  3. Aaron Judge RF
  4. Jazz Chisholm Jr. 2B
  5. Anthony Volpe SS
  6. Austin Wells C
  7. Jasson Domínguez LF
  8. Ben Rice DH
  9. Oswaldo Cabrera 3B
  • Starting Pitcher: Carlos Rodon

With Gerrit Cole out for the season and Luis Gil out until at least the middle of May, the Yankees' starting rotation looks quite concerning as they look to keep pace in a deep AL East division.

But those losses won't matter if the Yankees keep batting anything like we've seen so far. They boast a wRC+ of 203 and have hit 18 home runs in four games.

Rodon earned the start on Opening Day after finishing with a 2.91 ERA across 68 innings of work in the second half of last season. Rodon's K-rate also spiked considerably in the second half, as he struck out 11 batters per nine. He held a Stuff+ rating of 111 in 2024 to go with a Pitching+ rating of 107.

Rodon threw 89 pitches on Opening Day, so he should be close to fully stretched out entering this matchup.

Diamondbacks vs Yankees Prop Prediction, Betting Analysis

Game 2 of this series should be a good one, as two quality starters will look to tame a pair of the hottest offenses in baseball.

The Diamondbacks' lineup was among the most productive in baseball last season and is off to an excellent start in 2025. They held the highest OBP against left-handed pitching in 2024 and struck out just 20.3% of the time. In the early portion of this season, Arizona has struck out only 15.5% of the time against lefties.

Given that the Snakes' lineup looks comparably formidable to last year, they should once again be one of the toughest matchups in baseball for opposing lefties.

Rodon had seven strikeouts on Opening Day against the Brewers and has been one of the better pitchers in MLB dating back to the second half of last season. Still, his chances of recording more than 5.5 strikeouts in a matchup against the D-backs look to be overvalued with the under set at +105.

Pick: Carlos Rodon Under 5.5 Strikeouts (+105 · Play to -105)

Moneyline

There doesn't look to be much value with either side in this matchup.

Run Line (Spread)

Like the moneyline, I'm staying away from the run line here.

Over/Under

The over would be my lean in terms of a total, as both offenses should remain among the best in baseball moving forward.

If there was a little more reason to believe Gallen could struggle moving forward, I could bet this. But after one start, it seems safer to wait and see.
