The Houston Astros open their 10-game road trip with a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday night.

Emmet Sheehan will look to build on a dominant MLB debut in which he threw six shutout innings without allowing a hit Saturday against the San Francisco Giants. He and the Dodgers are priced as -140 favorites in a matchup versus J.P. France. France has pitched to a 3.42 ERA in 47 and 1/3 innings this season.

Let’s break it all down in our Astros vs. Dodgers preview and find a betting prediction with value.

Houston Astros

France will look Friday to continue what has been a strong start to his big league career. France has pitched to an xERA of 4.10 and an xFIP of 4.45 across 47 and 1/3 innings this season. His Stuff+ rating is strong at 106. That includes plus ratings on his fastball, cutter, and slider.

Over France's last three outings, his chase percentage is all the way down to 17%. His ability to generate soft grounders continues to be an asset, inducing hitters into three double plays in those three outings to help cover other concerns.

Over the past 30 days, Houston has hit to a wRC+ of 104, with a woba of .320. They have been quite pedestrian against right-handed pitching this season, with a 98 wRC+ across 2,106 plate appearances.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Sheehan has the potential to be the next arm to come up through the Dodgers farm system and succeed at the big league level. In 12 Double-A outings this season Sheehan pitched to a 1.86 ERA, which earned his call-up to the majors.

He features a strong fastball with a very unique fastball shape, which topped out at 98.1 in his debut Saturday and baffled the Giants. He works a slider off of that and also features a changeup. Neither of those secondary pitches rate very well, and he is heavily reliant on his dominant fastball.

Offensively, the Dodgers have been strong of late. Over the last 30 days L.A. owns a 107 wRC+ and .328 woba.

Chris Taylor pinch-hit Tuesday and could make a start this weekend. Dave Roberts also stated that Max Muncy could be activated and make a return to action this weekend.

Astros vs. Dodgers Betting Pick

The way that Sheehan has come out of nowhere makes for a very fun story, and I do think this is a reasonable spot to back him in the first five innings. The Dodgers' offense is currently a little more potent than the Astros' lineup, so Sheehan has that advantage.

Without counting on Sheehan to dominate, I believe this is a reasonable time to back the Dodgers in the first five in particular. Houston offers a dominant bullpen, and Sheehan could be an obvious target to thrive earlier in the game but perhaps struggle third time through the order. His unique fastball should do well early on, but his modest secondary profile could become a concern.

Pick: Dodgers F5 Innings (-140)
