The Mariners and Astros face off on Sunday in an intriguing rubber match in Seattle.
The Mariners made a statement in Friday night's series opener with an 11-1 blowout victory over Houston, although Justin Verlander threw eight stellar, shutout innings to get the Astros on the board in the series on Saturday.
Seattle has every intention to establish itself as the number one contender in the American League West, which seems like it could be a very competitive division in 2022.
Momentum in the series turned last night after a celebratory home opener for Seattle on Friday night. The Mariners will now turn to a promising young arm for the finale.
Urquidy Looks To Continue Astros' Strong Run of Pitching
José Urquidy will start for Houston coming off five innings of one-run ball against the Angels in his regular-season debut last week.
The right-hander only struck out two Angels, despite having the highest average fastball velocity of his career, but he still demonstrated solid command. Urquidy didn't walk anyone and only surrendered a solo home run to former Astros teammate Jack Mayfield — just as we all predicted.
Offensively, Houston is off to a surprisingly slow start in 2022. The Astros enter this game ranked in the bottom third of the majors in both runs scored and wRC+. They've learned heavily on their pitching en route to a 5-3 start.
Closer Ryan Pressly just hit the injured list with knee inflammation, so the Astros will be without their star reliever who has converted saves in three of their five wins so far.
Brash Faces Another Tough Test
The story for the Mariners is going to be all about Matt Brash making his home debut.
In his MLB debut last week, the 23-year-old right-hander showed a lot of poise on the road against one of the league's best offenses in the White Sox. Brash held the South Siders to two runs over 5 1/3 innings, striking out six. Unfortunately, Mariners hitters had just as much trouble and Seattle lost a tight 3-2 matchup.
The Mariners offense has been a solid unit, but they ran into a buzzsaw Saturday night in Verlander. Additionally, it's going to be a cold and damp afternoon in Seattle, which may turn this game into a low-scoring battle.
Astros-Mariners Pick
Although Urquidy isn't a marquee name, he's certainly a well-above-average pitcher. With Brash making his home debut, T-Mobile Park is going to be bumping.
The Astros offense has been a little slow out of the gates, and the Mariners have been a little erratic in the early going. Furthermore, both bullpens have been solid to start the year.
Considering this and the forecast for tomorrow afternoon's game, the under seems like a great play in this divisional matchup.
Pick: Under 8
