It's been a rough week for the San Diego Padres, who have lost six of their last eight games to slip below .500 at 34-35. The Padres have a golden opportunity to get back on track the next three days by hosting the Oakland Athletics at Petco Park.
Since going on an incredible 8-1 run in late April/early May, the A's own a dreadful 9-24 record the last 33 games, which includes failing to win consecutive contests during this stretch.
Read below for my Athletics vs. Padres pick and prediction for Monday, June 10.
The A's walked off past the Blue Jays on Friday night, but Oakland lost the final two games of its weekend home series with Toronto to drop to 26-41 and a last-place tie in the AL West with the Angels.
Oakland hasn't won a road series since stunning Baltimore twice in late April with a pair of comeback victories at Camden Yards. The A's are in the midst of a 3-13 slump away from the Coliseum in the last 16 games, which includes a 1-4 mark in series openers.
Joey Estes takes the mound in the series opener, coming off the best start of his young Major League career. Estes tossed six perfect innings against Seattle last Wednesday before allowing his first baserunner in the seventh inning of a 2-0 shutout.
In three of five starts this season, Estes has allowed one run or fewer, including shutting down the Mariners twice and yielding two hits in five innings at Tampa Bay. Another positive sign for Estes is the right-hander issuing six walks in five starts, with four of those free passes coming in an 8-1 loss at Houston.
Oakland was riding a six-game over streak prior to Sunday's 6-4 loss in extra-innings to Toronto as that game was tied at 3-3 on an 8-run total before a combined four runs scored in the 10th inning.
In spite of owning a losing record through 69 games, the Padres are actually the second Wild Card team in the National League. San Diego is one of 11 clubs in the NL that sits below .500, but the Padres are the best of that bunch after splitting a four-game series with Arizona.
The Padres were run out early by the D-Backs on Sunday in a 9-3 defeat after scoring a combined 23 runs in the previous two victories.
Third baseman Manny Machado missed the weekend set with a hip injury and is hopeful to return tonight as his replacements went 2-for-15 at the plate in the Arizona series.
Dylan Cease has allowed three earned runs or more in five consecutive starts, while losing as a heavy favorite to the Angels and Rockies in this stretch. The San Diego right-hander looks to turn around his home woes as the Padres are 1-4 in his five starts at Petco Park, as Cease has given up two runs or fewer once at home.
One of Cease's worst starts last season as a member of the White Sox came in a 12-4 home loss to the A's. Cease was torched for nine runs in less than five innings of work as he is looking for a better showing tonight against Oakland.
The Padres are 4-2 to the under in its last six home series openers, while scoring three runs or less in each of the past three Game 1s at Petco Park.
Athletics vs. Padres
Betting Pick & Prediction
Eleven of the last 13 wins for the Padres have come by two runs or more, as they try to get back on track following Sunday's blowout loss.
Estes was tremendous in his past outing against Seattle, but it's hard to think he will replicate that showing tonight.
Cease may not have an impressive record at 5-5, but is still a solid pitcher, and is looking to turn around his home numbers, as well as pitching better against Oakland following last August's poor showing.
