Braves vs Dodgers Preview, Prediction
It's been a slow start for the Braves, to say the least. They enter play Monday on a 22-inning scoreless streak after being shut out at the hands of the San Diego Padres on Sunday Night Baseball — a game in which they were held to just one hit.
However, not all hope is lost for Atlanta. Sure, it sits second-to-last in on-base percentage through the first weekend, but, at the same time, its walk rate stands at a decent 11.6%. Strikeouts have been an issue, but the Braves have had to face some strikeout-happy hurlers.
On the bump will be the intriguing Grant Holmes, who debuted as a 28-year-old rookie a season ago. He started just seven games, operating out of the bullpen for most of his time in the bigs, but recorded a solid 3.46 Expected ERA over 68 1/3 innings with a great 5.3% walk rate and above-average strikeout numbers.
Holmes is coming off a great spring, during which he finished with a 1.76 ERA over a pretty hefty 15 1/3 innings.
The Dodgers have quietly had a somewhat inauspicious start at the plate, failing to consistently reach base and relying heavily upon the long ball to win games. They're just 13th in OBP to begin the year, hitting .224 and have yet to see many of their stars, other than Mookie Betts and Will Smith, get it going.
That makes their 5-0 record somewhat scary, because we know this team is capable of so much more. It's not even as if L.A.'s pitching has been exquisite, either, with Roki Sasaki and Yoshinobu Yamamoto coming off poor starts against the Detroit Tigers.
However, things should turn around Friday, with Tyler Glasnow set to make his season debut. He was excellent in 2024, pitching to a 2.65 ERA, and his 32.2% strikeout rate ranked in the top 5%.
Glasnow continues to be one of the very best in the game. Last season, he seemed to take a step forward in staying healthy until nearly the final month of the year, when he was eventually shut down. He looked good this spring, though, so you should treat him as if he's healthy.
Braves vs Dodgers Over/Under Pick, Prediction
The Braves certainly don't want to see another strikeout machine on the hill after what they endured in San Diego, so the thought of facing arguably a top-five strikeout pitcher can't be very fun. To make matters worse, it's not as if Glasnow walks many batters, so all the offense could be sapped from this team.
As we've covered, however, I'm slightly down on the Dodgers' lineup — at least for now. They've been kind of like the 2024 Yankees in their sporadic nature, which doesn't give me the utmost confidence in betting on a big scoring output, particularly against Holmes.
Holmes' excellence in limiting walks and inducing outs on contact should help him against an extremely patient Dodgers team still shaking off its championship hangover. On the other hand, there should be little hope for Atlanta against one of the best in the league.
Pick: Under 8 (-105)
Moneyline
While sharp action has been tracked on the Dodgers, our systems and projections show some value on Atlanta.
Run Line (Spread)
The Braves hit the run line in 60% of their games as an underdog last year, going 18-12.
Over/Under
The Braves are just 1-2-1 to the over this season, but the Dodgers have hit it in four straight games. Having said that, the sharp money we're tracking is on the under.
