The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals split a doubleheader at Wrigley Field Tuesday. The Cardinals have surged past the Brewers in the National League Central division standings.
St. Louis enters play Wednesday with a five and a half game lead over Milwaukee. The Cardinals seem destined for the playoffs and October while the Cubs are in third place, 18 games back of the division lead. Chicago isn't in the Cardinals' class, but they have won six of their last 10 games.
Who will ultimately get the job done and take home the victory in this one?
Cardinals Continue Cooking on Offense
Miles Mikolas has been solid for the Cardinals this year. He's earned the win in 10 of his 25 starts. Despite his 3.32 ERA, his xFIP is quite a bit higher at 4.33. He isn't a big strikeout pitcher with an 18% K%, but he keeps the ball on the ground quite a bit as he has a 44% ground ball percentage.
The Cubs rank 20th in all of baseball averaging 4.11 runs per game at home this year. Mikolas has been worse on the road this season as he has a 4.23 ERA on the road compared to a 2.45 ERA at home.
Will New Blood Help the Cubs?
The Cubs are calling up Luke Farrell to start this game, his first appearance in the major leagues this season. He made 20 appearances in the majors for the Twins last year, though he only started one game and had a 4.74 ERA in 24 innings. In the minor leagues this season, Farrell had a 5.03 ERA over 17 games, 11 of them starts.
The Cardinals lineup is absolutely humming from top to bottom right now. Everyone from Lars Nootbaar to Albert Pujols is hitting the ball extremely hard at the moment. That doesn't bode well for Farrell's prospects in this one.
Cardinals-Cubs Pick
I'm on the Cardinals here. St. Louis has been rolling. The pitching has been good and the lineup has been hot as they continue to beat up on an easy end of season schedule on their way to the playoffs.
I don't expect Farrell, in his first major league appearance of the year, to stop this freight train coming his way. I took the Cardinals moneyline at -215 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Pick: Cardinals ML -215
