The Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals square off for the rubber match of their three-game series on Thursday afternoon.
The Cardinals continue to hold off the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central as they still hold a half-game lead. They are 8-2 over their last 10 games and they will head back to St. Louis after this one to take on the Brewers for a pivotal three-game series.
The Rockies are actually a pretty tough team at home, as usual, they are 31-28 at home so far this season.
Dakota Hudson will be squaring off against German Marquez in game three as the Cards look to snag a win heading into a key series at home.
Tough Road for Cardinals' Hudson
Hudson has been solid at home, but this is not a home game. Additionally, this is not a typical road game either. Hudson pitching at altitude with an ERA, FIP and xFIP all over 5 on the road this season could be a recipe for a lot of runs on Thursday. The Rockies have also been hitting RHP well at home over the past couple of weeks.
The Cardinals' offense has been a strong unit all season and they have been an above average unit against RHP on the road over the past couple of weeks. Even with the departure of Harrison Bader, it seems that Dylan Carlson and Lars Nootbar have slotted well into guaranteed everyday roles.
One downside is the Cardinals' bullpen has been fairly inconsistent this season. They have had stretches of being really bad, but overall are just an average unit despite having talented arms.
Colorado Hits Better at Home
Marquez is having a lost season. He has typically been one of the Rockies' more reliable starting options, but not this year. Marquez has a 6.11 ERA and a 4.94 FIP at home this season heading into Thursday's start.
The Rockies' offense has fared well against RHP at home over the past couple of weeks. Their 129 team wRC+ over the past two weeks has been the eighth-best mark in MLB against RHP at home over that time period.
This as historically been a strong split for the Rockies and facing a contact oriented pitcher with command issues may bode well for the home team.
Outside of that, the Rockies have not had many bright spots this season. Their bullpen is still among the league's worst and the Cardinals are a tough draw in any situation.
Cardinals-Rockies Pick
Considering the pitching situation in Thursday's matchup, this seems like a pretty volatile situation when it comes to scoring. The first two games of this series have seen totals of 21 and 14 runs, respectively.
The total is set at 12 today and at altitude, the over seems like the play today. Dakota Hudson struggles on the road. German Marquez struggles in general. Both bullpens are shaky. The over sits at -115 odds and should be played at -120 or better.
Pick: Over 12 (-115)
