The Chicago Cubs continue their nine-game road trip this weekend in the Pacific Northwest as they open up a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
The Cubs and Mariners met at this exact time last season at Wrigley Field as Chicago captured two of three meetings from Seattle.
Both teams have been up and down recently as these interleague foes meet in Seattle for the first time since 2019.
With the exception of facing the Rockies, the Cubs have been tested so far against the likes of the Rangers, Dodgers and Padres. Removing the 3-0 mark against Colorado, Chicago is just 4-5 against the three foes, while dropping two of three at San Diego this week.
The most damning loss came on Monday as the Cubs squandered an 8-0 lead in a 9-8 setback to the Padres. That marked the only defeat this season for Chicago in eight tries in which it scored five runs or more.
Left-hander Jordan Wicks makes his third start of the season for the Cubs and he has failed to pitch past the fifth inning so far. Wicks picked up a no-decision in his first outing at Texas as the Cubs blew multiple three-run leads in the first five innings.
The Cubs pulled away with four runs in the ninth inning, but Wicks allowed five runs (two earned) and walked three batters while striking out six.
Wicks put together four scoreless innings in his last outing against the Dodgers, but gave up a pair of singles in the fifth inning before exiting the game. The Cubs' bullpen allowed a run on a wild pitch and eventually a two-run single to Max Muncy as the Dodgers led 3-0 and Wicks was charged with two of the runs.
Amazingly, the Cubs have stolen a grand total of two bases this season, which is last in MLB.
The Mariners haven't been sharp out of the gate with a 5-8 record, while losing each of their last three series'. Seattle returns home following a 2-6 road trip at Milwaukee and Toronto as the M's needed extra innings to avoid the sweep against the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
In four series openers this season, the Mariners have lost three times with the only win coming as a short underdog against the Guardians on April 1.
Bryce Miller struggled in his first start by allowing four runs in five innings of a 5-1 home defeat to the Red Sox. However, the Seattle right-hander rebounded nicely in his last trip to the mound by tossing seven scoreless innings and striking out seven batters in a 5-3 victory at Milwaukee.
Dating back to last season, the Mariners were riding an 0-6 skid when Miller started prior to that victory over the Brewers. In 2023, Miller posted eight appearances at home in which he allowed one earned run or fewer.
The offense needs to get on track for Seattle as it scored a total of six runs in the first 27 innings at Toronto prior to busting out for five runs in the 10th inning on Wednesday.
Cubs vs. Mariners
Betting Pick & Prediction
The Cubs are 6-2 in the first five innings in the last eight games, while not allowing a run five times in this span.
Miller saw success at home last season and is coming off a solid outing, but it's tough to trust this offense that has not gotten going yet this season.
Wicks has also faced two tough offenses in the Rangers and Dodgers, so this struggling Seattle lineup will be a beneficial matchup for the left-hander.
