Following an off-day in their three-game set, the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres head back to the diamond on Wednesday at Petco Park.

The Padres blanked the Tigers in Monday's opener, 3-0, as San Diego maintains a half-game edge over Arizona for the top wild-card spot in the National League.

Unfortunately for Detroit, the Tigers may run out of time, although they have gone 15-6 in the last 21 games to improve to 70-69 and sit 4.5 games back of the Royals for the final wild-card position in the American League.

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview: White-Hot Motor City Kitties

The Tigers seemed out of the playoff conversation less than a month ago after dropping a pair of low-scoring games in San Francisco to slip to 55-63. But Detroit has ripped off 15 wins since August 11, including five series victories in the last six tries to sneak back into the AL wild-card conversation.

Considering the Royals have fallen apart over the last week, the door is still ajar for A.J. Hinch's team to keep chipping away with the next six games following this series against Oakland and Colorado.

Detroit's offense couldn't get going against Joe Musgrove and the Padres in Monday's 3-0 defeat, marking the first time the Tigers were shut out on the road since June 27 against the Angels.

With all the injuries to the Tigers' starting rotation (and the trade of Jack Flaherty to the Dodgers), Keider Montero has been the second-most reliable option this season behind AL Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal. Although Montero's ERA sits at 5.17, the right-hander has allowed three earned runs or less in four of the past five trips to the mound.

The Tigers won four consecutive starts made by Montero in August, including three as a heavy underdog against the Mariners, Giants, and Yankees. However, that streak came to a screeching halt in a 3-0 setback to the Angels as a -175 home favorite his last time out.

Montero will deliver innings as he has pitched at least five innings in 11 consecutive starts, while Detroit has posted a 4-1 mark in his five starts away from Comerica Park.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview: Rotation Looking Strong

The Padres have won 29 of 40 games since dropping the opener of the second half at Cleveland as San Diego has put itself into a great position to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

San Diego's pitching staff has been strong this season and it will get a boost tonight with the return of Yu Darvish, who hasn't pitched since late May. Darvish has been sidelined due to a variety of injuries while also spending time on the restricted list due to a family matter.

The veteran right-hander went through a four-start stretch in late April through mid-May in which he didn't allow a run as the Padres went 4-0 in those games. However, Darvish struggled in his final two starts prior to his injury by giving up 10 runs in nearly nine innings of work in blowout home losses to the Yankees and Marlins.

From a strikeout prop perspective, Darvish is 5-2 to the Under at home this season, while recording five strikeouts or less in four of those games.

Opposing starting pitchers have hit the Over on their K prop in four of the last five games against Detroit as Darvish's strikeout total sits at 4.5 and is heavily shaded to the Over.

The Padres rode a 13-game winning streak in Game 2 of a series before falling at Tampa Bay this past weekend, 11-4.

Tigers vs Padres Prediction, Betting Analysis

Montero has been a solid road underdog this season and can be trusted.

Considering Darvish is making his first start since late May, there is no guarantee he will last a long time tonight. Despite Monday's loss, Detroit has still played well and needs every win it can get down the stretch for a shot at a wild-card berth.

Pick: Tigers ML (+180) | Play to ML (+170)

Moneyline

The Padres have won three of the last four meetings with the Tigers since last season, while San Diego is riding a 12-4 home record since the All-Star break.

Detroit has won each of its past three games off a loss in a series opener.

Run Line (Spread)

San Diego's last two wins have come by one run apiece, but nine of their previous 10 victories were by at least two runs.

Six of San Diego's seven wins with Darvish starting this season have covered the run line, with the lone exception being a 9-8 win over the Cubs in which the Padres erased an 8-0 deficit.

Each of Detroit's past seven losses have come by at least two runs with the last one-run defeat coming at San Francisco on August 9.

Over/Under

Detroit is in the midst of a 6-1 Under run in the past seven games, while Montero is 5-1 to the Under in his past seven starts.

Darvish owns an 8-3 mark to the Over in his 11 starts this season as the Padres have scored at least six runs in six of his outings.
