We have the first matchup of this four-game series as the Cincinnati Reds host the Arizona Diamondbacks. This is the first meeting between these two teams this season.
Will the Reds win the opener of this series as a short home favorite, or can the Diamondbacks pull off the upset on the road?
Arizona Diamondbacks: Bumgarner Putting Together Solid Season
Left-handed veteran Madison Bumgarner is projected to take the mound for Arizona and should be worth backing as an underdog in this contest. This season, Bumgarner boasts a 3.31 ERA and a 1.196 WHIP through 11 starts.
Bumgarner should get good run support in this game as the Diamondbacks are slated to go against right-hander Hunter Greene. Since May 1st, the Diamondbacks rank second in the league in SLG, second in OPS and third in wOBA when facing right-handed pitchers on the road.
Arizona has been in great form recently if you factor out their two series against the Dodgers, one of the best teams in baseball. Subtracting those eight games against Los Angeles, the Diamondbacks have won 16 of their past 24 games (67%).
Cincinnati Reds: Greene Off to Rough Start
The Cincinnati Reds enter this series in poor form as they have lost nine of their past 16 games (56%). As I mentioned above, right-hander Hunter Greene is projected to take the mound for the Reds.
Greene has struggled mightily this season and possesses a 6.19 ERA and a 1.521 WHIP through 10 starts. Cincinnati has lost eight of the 10 games (80%) that Greene has started.
Following Greene is one of the worst bullpens in baseball. Since May 1st, the Reds' relief pitching ranks just 26th in the league in ERA, 18th in BA, 25th in SLG and 27th in wOBA.
This pitching staff may not get much run support as the Reds are slated to go against left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Through 113 career plate appearances against Bumgarner, this current Reds lineup possesses a mere .236 xBA.
Diamondbacks-Reds Pick
In a battle between two poor clubs, finding an edge can be tough. That being said, Arizona as an underdog should be a good bet considering the recent play of each team.
Arizona has a clear-cut advantage between the two projected starting pitchers. Add to the fact that the Diamondbacks have fared well against right handers in the month of May and I am comfortable backing Arizona at plus money.
Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks ML (+105) | Play up to (-110)
