The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks square off in game two of their three-game series on Tuesday night.
Following a convincing 6-0 victory in game one, the Dodgers look to clinch the series victory on the road, while the Diamondbacks look to force a rubber match on Wednesday.
Clayton Kershaw gets the start for the Dodgers, and he'll be taking on Merrill Kelly of the Diamondbacks. This matchup has pitcher's duel written all over it, but is it? Maybe. I guess you'll have to read more to find out.
The Dodgers are 7-3 over their last 10 games, while the Diamondbacks are 4-6 over their last 10.
Dodgers Have Edge in Pitching?
The Dodgers have been on an excellent run of late, but an area where they have slumped a bit is against RHP on the road. Over the past two weeks, they are 20th in MLB in team wRC+ against RHP on the road, which is out of step with their overall numbers.
Kershaw is on the mound, and he's been as solid as ever since his return from the injured list. Over those two starts, Kershaw has only surrendered three earned runs in 11 innings. Additionally, he has a 2.45 road ERA and a 2.98 road FIP, making him a solid road pitcher overall this season.
The Dodgers' bullpen has also had a solid stretch over the past two weeks, as it has the third-best FIP in MLB over that span. This gives the Dodgers an overall edge in terms of pitching, but only slightly.
Diamondbacks' Kelly Not Performing Well vs. NL West Rival
Kelly has been exceptional at home this season, posting an ERA and FIP under three while making his case to be considered as the Diamondbacks' staff ace.
However, his main weakness has been the Dodgers in 2022.
In three starts against the Dodgers, Kelly has been knocked around for a 9.69 ERA and a 5.27 FIP. Whatever magic he's been using in 2022, it has not fooled L.A.
The Diamondbacks' young — and mostly left-handed — lineup also does not stack up well against the Dodgers either. They also have the eighth-worst team wRC+ against LHP at home over the past month, and they will be dealing with one of the best lefties around.
Dodgers-Diamondbacks Pick
While backing Kelly has been a relatively reliable bet this season, he has not been able to solve the Dodgers' offense this season, which absolutely kills the Diamondbacks' value in this matchup.
The Dodgers are heavy favorites for a reason, therefore their runline should be the play Tuesday night. It remained steadily around -115 for -1.5, and that lack of movement is favorable considering it keeps the runline at a relatively nice value.
The Diamondbacks are a tough bunch and have been playing well lately, but the Dodgers have an overwhelming edge in every facet of this matchup.
Play the Dodgers runline to -150 or better.
Pick: Dodgers RL -115
