Dodgers vs Padres Pitching Matchup
One of the Dodgers' newest members will get the Opening Day start in Seoul, South Korea, as Tyler Glasnow will take the mound. The Padres, who lost NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell (who is still a free agent) during the offseason, will turn to their trusted veteran in Yu Darvish.
The 30-year-old Glasnow came to Los Angeles in a December trade with the Tampa Bay Rays that saw young players Jonny DeLuca and Ryan Pepiot shipped to St. Petersburg. The right-hander promptly inked a five-year deal with Los Angeles worth $136.5 million.
Injuries sidelined Glasnow for a majority of 2021 and 2022, as he pitched just a combined 94 2/3 innings in those two seasons. He came back last season and pitched what wound up being a career-best 120 innings for the Rays with a 3.53 ERA. He struck out 162 while walking just 37.
The 37-year-old Darvish has remained a reliable starting pitcher for the Padres despite seeing his numbers dip from his ace-like performances in the past. In 2023, he tossed 136 1/3 innings and posted a 4.56 ERA. His strikeout rate has dropped the last two years as he struck out just 24.6% of batters in 2023 and 25.6% in 2022, down from his peak years when he was closer to 30%.
The Korea Series will also see the debut of the two biggest signings for the Los Angeles Dodgers: Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Ohtani isn't expected to pitch in 2024 but should be in the lineup as the team's designated hitter on Opening Day. Yamamoto, meanwhile, is expected to start the second game of the Korea Series against San Diego's Joe Musgrove.
