On Friday, we’ll take the NRFI between two over-achieving National League teams — paired with two pitchers who achieved a NRFI in their first starts of the season.
Coors Field is where pitchers go to die, and in most games, so does the NRFI. That won’t be the case here today.
German Marquez is a sleeper NRFI great. In 2021, he posted an outstanding 28-5 NRFI record. Taking this a season back to 2020, he holds a 24-3 home NRFI record. To complement this, he owns a 3.67 home ERA in comparison to his 5.38 road ERA.
Another interesting ERA split Marquez holds is that when he faces hitters the first time through the lineup, they're hitting for a combined .231 batting average. More importantly, batters in the No. 1 spot are hitting him for just a lousy .184 mark.
Now to find Marquez's true NRFI potential is backing him when he's the favorite in a non-division game, where he has a perfect 12-0 NRFI record since 2021.
The batter-pitcher matchups aren’t bad nor great for Marquez as the sample size is very limited, leaving the edge of unfamiliarity on his side. Furthermore, he has achieved a NRFI many times against the Cubs in his career. He's 3-0 to the NRFI against them since the 2019 season.
Marcus Stroman is another silently elite NRFI pitcher. Coming off a NRFI to start 2022, he’s adding another NRFI win to his resume, which now stands at 28-4 since 2021.
His road NRFI split is a similar result at 15-2 since 2020. Stroman's home/away ERA is very similar sitting in the low threes, but he does have two splits we look to take advantage of.
In the first time through the lineup, hitters post an average of .221. Along with this, in 2021, he pitched 14 innings against the Rockies, which resulted in a 0.64 ERA and a poor .128 batting average.
This leads us to his top four potential hitters:
- Brendan Rodgers: 0-4 (.000)
- Charlie Blackmon: 2-8 (.250)
- Ryan McMahon: 1-9 (.111)
- Kris Bryant: 2-6 (.333)
Like Marquez, Stroman has found NRFI success directly against this matchup. He is 2-0 to the NRFI against the Cubs since 2019.
Today, Coors Field will go against its narrative of being a hitter's paradise. Take the NRFI between the Cubs and Rockies.
As always, six outs to glory…
