The Arizona Diamondbacks needed the Mets or Braves to sweep the other in Monday's doubleheader to reach the postseason.
After watching New York’s dramatic, unlikely comeback in Game 1, they became the biggest Mets fans outside the Tri State area. Unfortunately, a New York lineup filled with backups couldn’t pull out the win, falling to the Braves, 3-0, to eliminate Arizona from the postseason.
It completed a stunning collapse for the Diamondbacks, who were -1300 to make the playoffs at FanDuel during the last week in August. Those odds were far better than the Braves (-335) and Mets (+240). The Diamondbacks were 75-56 on Aug. 26 and just three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the standings. They also sat in first Wild Card spot as arguably the hottest team in the league.
Unfortunately, an Arizona team that went 40-25 in the second-half of the season sputtered at the worst time, losing five of their final seven games. They finished with the same record as the Mets and Braves but lost out on tiebreakers.
Arizona packs up for a long winter despite leading all of baseball in runs (886), RBIs (845), on base percentage (.337) and batting average (.263). The Diamondbacks are just the fourth team to miss the playoffs in the Wild Card era despite leading the league in runs, joining the 2011 Red Sox, 2008 Rangers and 1996 Mariners.
