The Seattle Mariners evened the series against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday evening with a 4-3 victory. On Sunday afternoon, the Mariners will send their ace George Kirby to the mound to try to leave Baltimore with a series victory.
Meanwhile, it will be Dean Kremer on the bump for the Orioles, who is looking to build off a 10-K performance in his last outing. Safe to say there may not be a lot of contact from either of these offenses in the early going.
Let's break down both teams below to uncover the best Mariners vs. Orioles prediction.
The Mariners have their hands full Sunday when they face Kremer. He is certainly not an elite pitcher, but he is starting to validate himself as a consistent big-league starter.
The issue for the offense is they lead the league in strikeouts per game, and Kremer is averaging roughly 9 K/9. That is not a good recipe for success, and it seems like Kremer is in line for another strikeout-heavy outing. However, the Mariners have had strong success against Kremer in the past. They are 13-for-44 with three homers as a team, which is what typically gives Kremer issues.
All they need to do is provide a few runs of support since Kirby is on the mound. Kirby enters the start with a 3.51 ERA, but you could argue he should have a lot better numbers.
Kirby owns a CSW near 30% and is among the top third of big-league starters in swinging strike rate. The Orioles' offense can get hot in a hurry, but Kirby is a force to be reckoned with on the mound.
The Mariners' bullpen is not the greatest, so it is tough to trust them for the entire game, but Kirby and the offense against Kremer give me confidence that they are set up for success.
The Orioles' offense may be unstoppable at times, but they have their hands full Sunday afternoon. Gunnar Henderson hit his league-leading 14th homer Saturday night, but it was not enough to power them to victory.
Baltimore is hitting .233 against Kirby in 78 at-bats, which is nothing to get too excited about. No Orioles hitter has more than four career hits against Kirby.
Kremer might have the arsenal to mow down the Mariners, but their career numbers against him give cause for concern. Kremer is averaging 3 BB/9 and is still prone to hard contact.
I realize the O's have the better team and are at home, but I think they are being overvalued here, just like last Sunday. The wrong team is favored.
Mariners vs. Orioles
Betting Pick & Prediction
It is never fun backing a strikeout-prone offense, but the Mariners should not be underdogs here. I realize they are on the road, but Kirby is a far better pitcher than Kremer.
Not only do they have the pitching advantage, but their offense has success against Kremer, which makes me confident they'll be able to score early and hold a lead. The bullpen can be shaky at times, but Kirby should go deep in the game to limit that variance.
