The Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners have each gotten off to slow starts this season. The two clubs are a combined 11 games under .500 and 20 games behind their division leaders. Seattle and Boston also each have negative run differentials in the double digits. These two teams will try to get back on track Thursday. The Red Sox are home favorites, but which club will get the job done?
Seattle: Can Mariners Score Against Hill?
Boston starter Rich Hill has been very effective lately and that could spell trouble for the Mariners' lineup. Seattle's offense hasn't been great this year as it's 21st in baseball with 141 runs scored. Julio Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford have hit for power against lefties and Eugenio Suarez hits for power against anyone, but this is still a good matchup for Hill. In his past four starts, Hill has allowed just two earned runs over 19 innings while striking out 15 and walking just four. He also went six innings in his last start — his longest of the year. He's fully stretched out now and at 42 years old he won't be holding anything back.
Boston: Patience Will Help Red Sox get to Kirby
The Red Sox have actually scored fewer runs than Seattle this season, rankings 24th in baseball with 136 runs scored. Still, the Red Sox have more talent in their lineup from top to bottom than the Mariners and this could be a good spot for them to get back on track. Boston has a veteran lineup that likes to take pitches and work the count. In a matchup against Mariners top prospect George Kirby — who's making his third career start in the Majors — a patient approach could lead to an early exit for Kirby. In his last start against the New YorkMets Kirby allowed three runs (only one earned) in four innings while only striking out one.
Mariners-Red Sox Pick
I like Boston here. Hill has been rounding into form in his past few starts and the Mariners offense is in the bottom third of the league and coming off of a disappointing series at the plate in Toronto. On the offensive side for Boston, a veteran lineup should be able to provide some run support for Hill against the rookie Kirby. Each of these bullpens have struggled this season as well so I don't need to take the first five inning line. I'm taking the money line at -131 on PointsBet.
Pick: Boston ML -131
