Seattle Mariners

Following an easy three-game road sweep of the awful White Sox this past weekend, the Mariners were bombarded in Boston in Monday's series opener.

To be fair, one strike three call that went against Seattle's Logan Gilbert that would have ended the third inning went the other way for a ball. Disaster struck for the M's as the Red Sox erupted for seven runs, all charged to the Mariners' All-Star as he allowed six consecutive hits.

The only positive to come out of Monday's loss was newly-acquired Randy Arozarena hitting his first home run as a Mariner. The former Rays outfielder is 5-of-11 with four runs scored in three games with Seattle.

The M's turn to another right-hander on Tuesday as Luis Castillo is winless in a pair of home starts since the All-Star break.

Castillo turned in six scoreless innings and struck out seven batters his last time out against the Angels, but Seattle's offense produced only one run as Los Angeles scored two late runs in a 2-1 road victory.

Since June 20, the Mariners own a dreadful 2-5 record in Castillo's last seven outings, which includes allowing nine runs in losses at Cleveland and Tampa Bay.

Dating back to late May, Seattle has won one of Castillo's past five road starts, as the Mariners routed the Angels, 11-0, in Anaheim on July 11.

Castillo has struggled against the Red Sox in his last two outings since 2023 by giving up 11 runs in 10 innings of work. Seattle is 0-2 in those games.

In the season opener, the right-hander gave up four runs in five innings in a 6-4 defeat, which was an improvement after yielding seven runs in a 9-4 setback at Fenway Park last May.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox had dropped seven of nine games prior to Monday's bust out, but Boston has allowed seven runs or more in five consecutive contests.

Boston rebounded from giving up 20 runs at Colorado last Wednesday to beat New York in its series opener on Friday, but ultimately, it lost the final two games to the Yankees.

Six players had at least two hits for the Sox on Monday, including a three-hit, four-RBI night for DH Masataka Yoshida.

James Paxton won seven games for the Red Sox in 2023 before signing with the Dodgers prior to this season. In spite of an 8-2 record, Paxton owned a 4.43 ERA and 1.46 WHIP as Los Angeles designated the southpaw for assignment.

Paxton is back in Beantown after getting dealt back to the Red Sox last week. He's looking to become the one stable left-handed pitcher in a rotation full of right-handers.

The veteran allowed two first-inning runs in his last start as a Dodger, which coincidentally came against the Red Sox at home on July 21. Los Angeles bounced back for six unanswered runs as Paxton gave up only one run the rest of the way before exiting in the sixth inning.

Keep an eye on the walks for Paxton, who has issued at least two free passes in five straight starts. Seattle ranks second in the American League in walks with 359.

Betting Pick & Prediction

The Mariners have lost five of their last six games against left-handed starting pitchers.

Also, Paxton faces the team he pitched six seasons for to begin his career.

Castillo has struggled against Boston recently and although this is a more favorable line for him compared to the previous two starts, it's hard to make a strong case for the right-hander.

Pick: Red Sox Moneyline (+102; bet to -110)
