After taking three out of four from the Nationals in Washington, the Mets will face another National League East division opponent as they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies. The Phillies began their season by taking two out of three against the Oakland Athletics at home.
Something must give in this matchup, but who will keep up their winning ways — the Mets or the Phillies?
Not a Great Matchup for Taijuan Walker
Mets starter Taijuan Walker will take the mound in this one making his first start of the season. Philadelphia's offense is a tough matchup for most pitchers after the signings of Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber, but Walker would seem to be an especially bad matchup.
Despite being a right-handed pitcher, Walker allowed a higher isolated-power to right-handed batters last year (.182) than to left-handed batters (.164). The Phillies lineup packs a punch from both sides of the plate, but includes power threats from the right side J.T. Realmuto (.176 ISO), Castellanos (.267), and Rhys Hoskins (.283).
The Mets could be in trouble late in this one if the game is close as they will be without closer Edwin Diaz who is on the bereavement list.
Phillies Sending Ranger Suarez to Mound
Ranger Suarez takes the mound for the Phillies for the first time this season. Suarez, only 26-years-old is a popular breakout candidate this season after bursting onto the scene last year.
In 106 innings in the majors last year (12 starts), he had a ridiculous 1.36 ERA that was mostly supported by ERA estimators (2.60 xERA, 2.72 FIP, 3.38 xFIP).
Mets-Phillies Pick
While the Mets made significant additions to their offense in the offseason by adding Starling Marte, Mark Canha and Eduardo Escobar, I still give the Phillies starter Ranger Suarez the upper hand in this matchup.
Suarez also has the added benefit of being at home for this game. The Phillies were 5-3 in his eight home starts last year, including one win against the Mets. New York struggled mightily on the road last year as they went 30-51. Back the Phillies on the moneyline here.
