No one likes wasting time and we all want to get right to the picks, so let's do exactly that. The MLB best bets for Sunday, July 2 are below.
MLB Odds & Picks
Diamondbacks vs. Angels
Collin Whitchurch: Reid Detmers sure seems to be figuring it out.
The young left-hander has allowed just three earned runs in his past four starts, tallying 34 strikeouts and just eight walks in 25 2/3 innings.
Detmers gets a solid matchup on Sunday afternoon against a Diamondbacks offense that is considerably worse against left-handed pitching. The Snakes have just a 98 wRC+ against southpaws this season compared to a 109 mark against right-handers. They also might be without star outfielder Corbin Carroll, who missed Saturday's game with injury and whose status for Sunday is unknown.
Zac Gallen remains the NL Cy Young favorite despite hitting a few bumps in June. The Angels are better against right-handed pitching, but Gallen's strong track record gives me confidence in his ability to get through the order unscathed a time or two.
I don't want anything to do with either bullpen in Sunday's contest, but a Gallen-Detmers matchup has all the makings of a low-scoring affair early. I would bet the F5 under 4.5 at -120 or better.
Pick: F5 Under 4.5 |
Guardians vs. Cubs
Anthony Dabbundo: Jameson Taillon has openly discussed his problems with getting lefties out of late, and his stuff has been in a solid decline. The Cubs don't really have a way of replacing him in the starting rotation while he works through the struggles, so he will start on Sunday against the Guardians.
His last two starts have seen a Swinging Strike Rate of 6.7% against Philadelphia and 4.9% against Baltimore. He filled up the zone a lot more in those two starts, which is a sign that his stuff isn't playing nearly as well. The spin rates and velocity were down on all of his offerings, especially in his last outing against the Phillies on Tuesday.
The Guardians have the second-lowest Strikeout Rate in baseball and can also load up the lineup with seven left-handed bats to further trouble Taillon. Taillon will need a lot to go right to be successful, and that type of outing probably relies on a lot of soft contact, not strikeouts. The Guardians don't swing and miss in the zone, so if Taillon continues to flood the zone, plenty of balls will be in play. I'd bet under 3.5 strikeouts at anything plus money on Sunday.
Pick: Jameson Taillon Under 3.5 Ks +115 |
Giants vs. Mets
Doug Ziefel: For our final pick of the slate, we head to Queens, where the freshly recalled David Peterson will look to continue his success in his second stint with the Mets this season. Peterson has now been thrust into the Mets rotation due to injury on two occasions, and while command has been an issue, he should have success on Sunday Night Baseball.
Peterson will face the San Francisco Giants tonight, who boast the fourth-highest Strikeout Rate in the big leagues. We saw both Carlos Carrasco and Justin Verlander rack up strikeouts for the Mets in the first two games of this series, and Peterson is in line to follow them.
While the lefty has a great matchup, this total is also too low for Peterson. He has surpassed this total in eight of nine big league starts this season. Barring an early blowup, we should see him make it nine of 10 tonight.
Pick: David Peterson Over 4.5 Ks -160 |
