It may be the dog days of the summer on the sports-betting calendar, but that's not stopping both sharp and public bettors from getting down on today's MLB slate. Professionals obviously don't worry about the sport, time of year or anything else, as long as that wager is offering value.
However, public bettors are surprisingly interested in Thursday's MLB schedule, according to The Action Network's proprietary public money data. It's tough to tell exactly why so much recreational money is hitting the MLB betting market — potentially because of the influx of World Cup bettors waiting for Sunday's final — but it's there nonetheless.
As always, wiseguys are happy to take advantage of public money when possible, and that's exactly what's taken place before this afternoon's Arizona Diamondbacks-Colorado Rockies (3:10 p.m. ET) game.
Colorado opened as a -130 favorite against Arizona at Bookmaker.eu, and 61% of both moneyline tickets and dollars have taken the Rockies. Yet the D-backs have flipped from +110 underdogs to -110 favorites.
While the majority of recreational bettors are taking Colorado, professionals have been responsible for the line movement after jumping all over Arizona. According to Sports Insights' Bet Signals, wiseguys steamed the Diamondbacks at -101 early this morning, triggering a Steam Move alert at Pinnacle.
This is significant because Pinnacle is a market-setting offshore sportsbook that accepts high-limit action from professional bettors. While public bettors are gladly grabbing the Rockies at home, sharps have been betting the Diamondbacks all morning.
