On Tuesday, we head to the Rogers Centre to take a NRFI between two American League teams — the White Sox and Blue Jays.
Lucas Giolito is the White Sox's best NRFI pitcher. Since the 2021 season, Giolito is 30-9 to the NRFI, including his 5-2 start to 2022. Giolito's 4-0 road NRFI record in 2022 is just a glimpse of his road NRFI success where he is 24-3 since 2020.
Since 2020, Giolito is 1-0 against the Blue Jays, and here is how he has fared in some key matchups:
- George Springer: 1-for-6
- Bo Bichette: 0-for-3
- Vlad Guerrero Jr: 3-for-7
- Teoscar Hernandez: 1-for-8
He has held the top of the order to a combined 5-for-24. (.208)
The Blue Jays are surprisingly a weak hitting team in first innings. In the month of May, they have the 27th-ranked first-inning home batting average at .167, going 5-for-30. They also are struggling to obtain walks in first innings as they have just two walks in the month of May, which is tied for 28th in the MLB.
There are a few splits we have in our advantage as well. Teoscar Hernandez is projected to bat fourth today and is only hitting .100 at home, going 3-for-30 so far this season.
Kevin Gausman has been a phenomenal NRFI pitcher in 2022, going 8-1 out the gate. Since 2020 across two teams at home, Gausman is 20-5 to the NRFI. He has only issued two walks against 35 batters in 2022 as he has shown great control early on.
In the past, here is how Gausman has fared against the White Sox:
- Leury Garcia: 0-for-3
- Yoan Moncada: 1-for-4
- Jose Abreu: 2-for-6
- Yasmani Grandal: 1-for-3
Today, the White Sox will be without their best hitter and NRFI killer Tim Anderson.
The White Sox batters have been horrific in the first inning in May. In 103 plate appearances, they have only managed 18 hits and eight walks, which is good for a .194 average (28th in MLB). It should be noted this was all with leadoff hitter Tim Anderson playing, who was hitting .385 in May.
In the last week, the top of the White Sox order has been slumping:
- Leury Garcia: 1-for-8
- Yoan Moncada: 0-for-9
- Yasmani Grandal: 1-for-14
Look for Giolito to continue his road NRFI success and for Gausman to mow down these slumping White Sox hitters without Anderson's dangerous bat in the lineup.
As always, six outs to glory…
