The defending World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers were in an extremely tough spot, down 1-0 to the Giants in the NLDS.
It's fair to say that with their massive payroll and stacked roster, anything less than another World Series appearance would feel like a massive failure.
Los Angeles came up clutch in Game 2, getting 5.0 innings of three-hit ball from starter Julio Urias and an excellent bullpen performance to boot.
The Dodgers offense—which was mostly stymied by Giants starter Logan Webb in a 4-0 Game 1 loss—came alive, collecting 11 hits and 9 runs on the night, including a huge 388-foot home run from catcher Will Smith.
In Game 3, Los Angeles will have dominant ace Max Scherzer on the mound against Giants left-hander Alex Wood.
Although the playoffs are obviously a completely different beast than the regular season, they offer some valuable insight into what could be a tight series.
While both Wood and Scherzer have put together excellent seasons with 10 or more wins and sub-1.2 WHIPs, Wood's numbers in this specific matchup are the ones that caught my eye.
Wood has lost his last three starts against the Dodgers, including an 8-6 loss in the most-recent regular-season matchup.
In that game, Wood gave up six hits and three earned runs, including a 416-foot home run to Chris Taylor.
That was some time ago, but the instance brings to mind possible issues Wood could have in high-leverage situations on Monday evening.
Our latest MLB PRO Report showcases which side is the stronger play in a Game 3 matchup that could be closer than expected.
