Allan Lem's Padres vs Cubs Best Bet: Trust Vasquez's Command
By Allan Lem
Vasquez is coming off a four-walk performance, but I'm viewing this as a bounce-back spot. Most season-long projection systems have Vazquez closer to a 3.2 BB/9 pitcher this season, which makes sense when looking at his numbers. Last season, he made dramatic strides in control, finishing with a 6.7% walk rate, which resulted in a 2.6 BB/9 ratio.
I'm projecting him closer to 2.2 walks allowed on Friday.
The matchup isn't ideal as the Cubs have been red-hot and ranked as a top-10 team last season in walk rate (8.9%), but I like what I've seen from Vasquez in terms of control over the past year and am looking for him to rebound from his last outing based on the longer sample.
Pick: Randy Vasquez Under 2.5 Walks (-150)
Allan Lem's Blue Jays vs Mets Best Bet: Gausman's Control is Worth Backing
By Allan Lem
The Mets ranked among the top-10 in walk rate last season, but I'm trusting the longer sample we have of Kevin Gausman as a pitcher with solid control.
He has a 6.7% walk rate across his Major League career and was at 7.4% last season. This translated to a 2.78 BB/9 ratio. He walked just one in his first start last week and has had a sub-3 BB/9 ratio every year since 2018.
I'm projecting this closer to 2.1 walks.
Pick: Kevin Gausman Under 2.5 Walks (-160)
Will Priester's Athletics vs Rockies Best Bet: Back Bido in Colorado
By Will Priester
Getting this prop at plus money is a really good investment on this slate.
The Rockies will strike out and if Bido can stay out of trouble, the strikeouts should be there today. I'm really hoping that his strong Spring Training can carry over into some of these great matchups early in the season.
