After a 2-1 Saturday, we are rolling into Sunday's slate with hopes of ending the week on a high note with our MLB player props.
While today's slate lacks star power on the mound, there are still picks to be made. Today's top props feature a few of the biggest edges on the docket, so let's dive in.
MLB Player Props For Sunday, May 7th
Mason Miller Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-117)
Athletics vs. Royals | |
First Pitch | 2:10 pm ET |
Best Line | BetRivers |
The A's rookie right-hander has flashed his electric stuff through his first three career starts. With a fastball consistently touching triple digits and a slider that has a 47% whiff rate, Miller has already become a tough assignment for opposing lineups.
This afternoon he'll be up against the Kansas City Royals, who enter today with the 12th-highest team strikeout rate in the majors. While that rate has begun to level out over the last few weeks, the Royals have multiple hitters with strikeout rates over 30%.
Miller has sailed over this total in his first three starts, and Kansas City is his best matchup to date. As long as he can tunnel his fastball and slider effectively, he should have no problem extending his over streak to four straight.
Pick: Over 4.5 Strikeouts
Jose Suarez Under 17.5 Outs Recorded (-115)
Rangers vs. Angels | |
First Pitch | 4:07 pm ET |
Best Line | bet365 |
Jose Suarez has quietly become a staple in the backend of the Angels rotation. He's not flashy, but he's shown in the past that he can get outs at the big-league level. However, the one theme we've seen in his young career is that he does not work deep into ballgames.
Suarez is not an overpowering pitcher and because of that, he generally allows quite a bit of contact. This season, that contact has turned into a multitude of hits. Suarez has surrendered eight or more hits in three of his five starts this season, and he has a tough matchup this afternoon.
The Texas Rangers have been swinging the bats well through the first month of the season, and they enter Sunday ranked fourth in wOBA and third in wRC+. This is a team that should do damage against Suarez by creating traffic on the bases and ultimately runs on the board.
I mentioned that Suarez not going deep into games was a theme, so here are the numbers. Over his last 27 starts, he has gone under this total in 81.5% of them. That gives us staggering implied odds of -439.
All signs point to another short outing for Suarez this afternoon.
Pick: Under 17.5 Outs Recorded
Michael Kopech Under 5.5 Strikeouts (-130)
White Sox vs. Reds | |
First Pitch | 4:10 pm ET |
Best Line | DraftKings |
Michael Kopech was one highly touted prospect that boasted a triple-digit fastball and wipeout off-speed stuff behind it. However, command has always been an issue, and the injuries he's dealt with have caused his stuff to regress.
While he has shown flashes of being able to put up decent strikeout numbers, Kopech's inability to command his arsenal and execute has limited his strikeouts more often than not.
Kopech has gone under this total in four of six starts this season. This has added to him going under in 23 of his last 31 starts.
That career trend gives us implied odds -287 that he will go under again today against a Reds lineup that has done a nice job of cutting down on strikeouts.
Pick: Under 5.5 strikeouts
