Tigers Betting Preview: Starting Lineups; Skubal

Tigers Starting Lineup

  1. Justyn-Henry Malloy DH
  2. Kerry Carpenter LF
  3. Riley Greene CF
  4. Spencer Torkelson 1B
  5. Colt Keith 2B
  6. Zach McKinstry RF
  7. Javier Báez 3B
  8. Trey Sweeney SS
  9. Jake Rogers C

Shockingly, the Tigers are 0-2 in Tarik Skubal’s two outings, losing 5-4 to the Dodgers and 3-2 to the Mariners.

Looking deeper, Skubal has struggled with allowing homers and has seen a notable dip in his strikeout numbers, down to 8.7 K/9, compared to over 10 K/9 last year. Last year, Skubal allowed just 15 homers and allowed 3 in two starts in 2025. It hasn't been a terribly unlucky start, he sports a brutal 5.51 xERA, and .275 xBA, and ranks in the 16th percentile in barrel rate.

The market clearly doesn’t have any worries about Skubal, as Detroit is a -170 favorite against one of the AL favorites. He punched out eight Mariners in his second start and that bodes well against a Yankees team that punches out 24% of the time. The last three pitchers who faced the Yankees punched out 5+ batters, including Andrew Heaney, who tagged 10 K's. However, Skubal getting hit this hard is a bit worrisome, even in a small sample.

Offensively, the Tigers have made some major strides from last year. They have the third-best wRC+ (124) and a fantastic 11% walk rate. Contrasting the success drawing walks is an unpalatable 24% strikeout rate, but strikeouts and walks lead to deeper counts and shorter outings from starters.

The biggest offensive success so far is former top-overall pick, Spencer Torkelson. He has the second-best wRC+ on the Tigers roster behind All-Star, Riley Greene. While the Tigers lacked consistent first-base production a season ago, Torkelson has added a little pop to the middle of the order.

Yankees Betting Preview: Starting Lineups; Carrasco's Old

Yankees Starting Lineup

  1. Paul Goldschmidt 1B
  2. Ben Rice DH
  3. Aaron Judge RF
  4. Jazz Chisholm Jr. 2B
  5. Anthony Volpe SS
  6. Austin Wells C
  7. Jasson Domínguez LF
  8. Trent Grisham CF
  9. Oswald Peraza 3B

The Yankees resorting to starting 38-year-old Carlos Carrasco speaks to the current state of their rotation. Until Clarke Schmidt is back, Carrasco will take the ball every fifth day.

Some pitchers age gracefully. That’s not the case for Carrasco — who has a 7.36 ERA through two outings — one start and one relief outing. Perhaps it gets better, as his 3.77 FIP indicates some unlucky results so far.

I’m skeptical about his FIP, though. You look at his expected numbers and they sit at a 5.03 xERA and a 3.77 xFIP. If you take a peek at his underlying percentiles — they don’t look great. He lacks strike-out stuff nowadays (45th percentile in K%), gets hit hard (18% percentile in average exit velo), and is only good at avoiding walks (69th percentile in BB%). He’ll also need to give Aaron Boone some length.

It might not feel like it after making Casey Mize and Heaney look like Cy Young contenders, but the Yankees have a 161 wRC+, which leads the bigs. The Yankees have the best-isolated power in the sport at .300 and have the second-highest batting average (.285). So, whether you prefer new-school or old-school stats, this Yankees offense has impressed.

Every regular player in the Yankees lineup — other than Cody Bellinger has a wRC+ at 100 or better. Oddly, Trent Grisham has a higher wRC+ than Aaron Judge, but the two-time MVP winner has a 246 wRC+. Even if the Yankees swing and miss a lot, they'll put pressure on pitchers and draw up pitch counts.

Losing the first game of the series allowed the Bronx Bombers bullpen to rest. So, a full arsenal will be out there with Luke Weaver and Devin Williams waiting to close out the game.

Yankees vs Tigers Tuesday Prediction, Betting Analysis

Initially, I came in planning to back the Tigers at -125 to -140, considering the Yankees closed as -160 favorites in the opener with Carlos Rodon on the hill.

Going from -162 to +142 is a huge contrast and the value on New York, even against the best pitcher in the American League is too good to pass on.

I believe in the Yankees lineup and they should succeed in drawing up the count on Skubal on a cold day in Detroit. He might not have his A+ stuff with the weather sitting in the 30s/40s, so he has to dig deep in his bag to pitch like an ace.

Then, you drag in the bullpens and I'll give the nod to the Yankees, who have an elite 8th/9th-inning combo with Luke Weaver and Devin Williams.

The Tigers' back-end options aren't as solidified. AJ Hinch will mix and match leading to the ninth, where he'll give Tommy Kahnle the ball. The only Tigers advantage is Skubal, and I can't justify Detroit being -170 for just that reason.

Pick: Yankees ML (play to +130)
