Yankees vs Pirates Preview, Prediction Sunday
Will Warren, a standout for the Yankees during spring training, has earned a look in the rotation after a plethora of pitching injuries. In his season debut against the Diamondbacks, he fired five innings of two-run ball, with four strikeouts and four walks.
On offense I’m sure the Yankees would love to still have Juan Soto, but they really haven't missed a beat in his absence. The Bronx Bombers have a 179 wRC+, buoyed by Aaron Judge, who is on the hunt for his third MVP.
The Yankees' offensive dominance has wrecked the Pirates' starters in the first two games.
Mitch Keller allowed seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings and Bailey Falter allowed seven runs in four innings. The starters getting shelled has created a chain reaction that's taken all of the depth out of Pittsburgh's bullpen. There's some tired arm in the 'pen ready for a day off.
Worth noting: Cody Bellinger missed the first two games of this series with nagging back issues. It wasn't a problem in the first two, we'll see if it matters here.
Plus, Ben Rice, Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm have each contributed in major ways, whether it be the torpedo bat or not.
Chisholm and Volpe each have four home runs on the season and Rice clearly hit the weight room as has a different level of exit velo and power this year. That’s the difference between the Yankees' offense relying just on Judge and being an actual elite offense.
I wasn't sure if the Pirates losing to the Marlins on three walk-offs to begin the year was unlucky or a precursor to a rough year.
I'm beginning to think the latter.
As for the Pirates' offense, I have some serious concerns. Besides the seventh inning on Friday and the fourth inning on Saturday, it’s been another forgettable series.
Pittsburgh has a 71 wRC+ and just six home runs this year. One of the home runs is from Nick Gonzales, who got injured on the swing, and Oneil Cruz is the only hitter with multiple homers.
Swinging and missing is another problem, punching out 25% of the time and that’s a concern against Warren.
The Pirates just have no juice unless Cruz or Bryan Reynolds do something, and they haven't done enough to carry the Pirates.
A former Yankee, Andrew Heaney, takes the hill for his second start with the Pirates. Heaney began his year with five innings, four hits and one run allowed against the offensively challenged Marlins.
Heaney is a soft-tossing southpaw (90.5 mph on his fastball against Miami) who hopes to generate his outs via the fly ball. That could be a problem against the high-powered Bronx Bombers.
Just rewinding to last year, only 34% of Heaney's outs came via the groundout and 22.9% via strikeout. That's a lot of fly balls — and unless a pitcher has pinpoint command with a weaker arsenal, then it could be bombs away.
Yankees vs Pirates Sunday Prediction: Run Line Pick
The Yankees look like a well-oiled machine so far and I like Warren's upside. He has a nasty sweeper and the overall stuff to keep a swing-happy Pirates team off-balance.
I see this game following the same script as the first two games — a dominant win for the road team.
Pick: Yankees -1.5 +105 (play to -105)
