The top two teams in the American League meet on Tuesday for the start a crucial three-game series in the Bronx as the New York Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees own a 1 1/2-game edge over the Orioles entering Tuesday after New York stubbed its toe in a series loss at Boston this past weekend.
Baltimore could jump New York for first place in the American League East with a sweep this week as the O's send out one of their strong young arms to the mound in the series opener in Albert Suarez. The Yankees will counter with left-hander Nestor Cortes.
Let's get into my MLB preview and Orioles vs Yankees betting prediction on the first five innings (F5) over/under.
The Orioles finished off a six-game homestand against a pair of National League playoff teams from last season by going 4-2 against the Braves and Phillies.
The offense busted out in the final two victories over Philadelphia by scoring 14 runs, including hitting four home runs off Phillies' ace Zack Wheeler on Sunday.
Friday's 5-3 loss to the Phillies marked the first defeat in a series opener for Baltimore in the past seven tries, with the last defeat coming at St. Louis on May 20.
Albert Suarez makes his eighth start of the season for Baltimore as he looks to lower his ERA, which sits at 1.61, while the O's are 5-2 in those games. In the two losses, Oakland scored two runs in the ninth inning to take a 7-6 lead and Toronto won in walk-off fashion.
Suarez is coming off his fourth scoreless effort of 2024, as he limited Atlanta to four hits in 5.1 scoreless innings of a 4-0 triumph as a home underdog.
The Orioles captured three of four from the Yankees at Camden Yards in late April/early May while holding New York to six runs in the entire series.
Baltimore has seen plenty of success against left-handed starting pitchers over the last two months by posting a 12-2 record in the last 14 games when facing a southpaw.
The Yankees continue to grab wins at a torrid pace, although the rival Red Sox stood in the way this past weekend at Fenway Park. New York picked up a win in the series opener but lost the final two games in Boston by a combined score of 17-7.
Aaron Boone's team was still the first in baseball to reach the 50-win mark, as the Yankees will welcome back last season's Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole to the mound for the first time this season Wednesday.
Before Cole gets his opportunity, Nestor Cortes Jr. receives the start on Tuesday, looking to revert to the form of 2022 when the left-hander finished 12-4 with a 2.44 ERA.
Over the last two seasons, Cortes has compiled a subpar 8-7 record, but his ERA has improved by over a run since last season by owning a 3.59 ERA in 2024.
Unsurprisingly, the lefty is seeing more success pitching in the Bronx, with four scoreless outings in seven home starts. However, the Yankees are barely above .500 in those outings at 4-3, which included him allowing four earned runs in less than six innings of an 11-3 blowout loss to the Dodgers.
In his last matchup with the Orioles, Cortes yielded four runs in six innings of a 4-2 loss, marking the second straight time against Baltimore he has given up four runs (May 2023).
The Yankees will be without first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who suffered an arm fracture in Sunday's loss at Boston and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Rizzo has struggled at the plate this season by hitting .223 while owning career-lows in OBP and slugging percentage.
Orioles vs. Yankees
Betting Pick & Prediction
The Yankees will certainly be motivated headed back home, especially looking to avenge the series loss in Baltimore earlier this season.
New York owns a 5-0-5 record in the first five innings in home series openers this season, but what's interesting is in the five pushes, the Yankees have not allowed a run. In those 10 games, the Yankees have given up two runs in the first five innings.
Cortes has shown his prowess at home, while Suarez is 5-2 to the Under in the first five innings this season.
Look for a low-scoring start Tuesday and bet the Under in the first five innings.
