The San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants will square off in the final game of their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants have very, very, very longshot hopes of snagging a Wild Card spot, while the Padres look to add to their lead in the Wild Card race.
Joe Musgrove will try to get the Padres the W in the series finale as Alex Wood hopes to get the Giants back on track.
Both teams have been in the midst of poor stretches, with the Giants being in a much worse stretch between the two. While their playoff window is almost closed, the Giants look to spark one final push heading into the last month of the season.
Padres Bats Get Favorable Matchup Against a Lefty
The San Diego Padres' high powered offense has still shown the ability to generate scoring opportunities over the past month as they have been particularly tough on LHP on the road over that span. The Padres are tied for the seventh-best wRC+ against LHP on the road over the past month, and they get to face the lefty Wood in Wednesday's match up.
Musgrove gets the ball for the Padres, and he's fallen off considerably in the second half as both his ERA and FIP are over four in the second half. However, those numbers look a lot better if you throw out a rocky start against the… Rockies earlier in August.
Additionally, the Padres' bullpen has been rolling as of late. Over the past two weeks, they've been a top-10 unit in FIP and ERA, which has greatly alleviated the pressure on their starting staff.
Giants Hitters Need Improvement
Wood gets the ball for the Giants on Wednesday, and he's had a rough season. Although he'll have flashes, he's struggled to develop consistency from start to start and has even been inconsistent during his starts.
In August, Wood has an 8.53 ERA and a 5.26 FIP, so he's probably pretty annoyed that he had to make one more start on the last day of the month.
Speaking of annoying, the Giants' offense has been incredibly underwhelming this season. While they may be able to slug when they do put the ball in play, they are not walking as much as we're used to, and they are simply not getting hits at a meaningful rate.
And their bullpen? Don't even get me started.
Padres-Giants Pick
The Padres and Giants have been playing each other tough this series, and as much as the Giants have some appeal as underdogs at +120, nothing seems to reflect that their moneyline is worth the risk.
The Padres' moneyline opened at -136 at BetRivers, and if it stays there, that should be the play. However, the Padres don't have as considerable of an edge as it may seem as Musgrove has been pretty ordinary in the second half. Only play this to -150 or better.
Pick: Padres Moneyline -136 (BetRivers)
