The San Diego Padres stunned the New YorkMets in game one of their Wild Card series with a convincing 7-1 victory. Yu Darvish pitched a gem. Max Scherzer did not. Now the Padres look to put the Mets away for good.
Blake Snell and Jacob deGrom will square off on Saturday evening in what could easily be the best pitching match up of the night. The Mets were 2-4 against the Padres in their regular season series and now they face elimination after their dream season came crashing down.
In a battle of two teams that seem to be a little cursed we will soon find out who's the most cursed of all!
Can San Diego's Hitters Find Success Again?
Blake Snell has unfinished playoff business. The last time we saw Snell in a playoff setting, he was getting pulled from the mound in the middle of twirling a gem in the World Series in 2020. Now he looks to solidify himself as a big time postseason pitcher.
Unfortunately, his supporting cast has been relatively underwhelming despite lighting up Scherzer on Friday night. Overall, the Padres have still been a below average offense against RHP on the road as of late and they're tasked with taking on an elite pitcher in his stronger split.
Furthermore, the Padres' bullpen has been a fairly average group overall. In the postseason and against an offense like the Mets, average might not be good enough.
Mets Need Dominant Jacob deGrom
Jacob deGrom has not pitched in the postseason since 2015 and if it were 2021, it would be easy to say he's a much different pitcher now. However, it is 2022 and realistically deGrom wasn't very deGrom-like in his last four starts of the season.
In that span he went 0-3 with losses to the Atlanta Braves, the Chicago Cubs, and the Oakland Athletics sprinkled in. He posted a 6.00 ERA over that span, but he also posted a 3.68 FIP and a 1.31 xFIP.
Additionally, the Mets' bullpen has been excellent down the stretch posting the second-best FIP and seventh-best ERA over the past month of the season. However, the Mets spared some of their most valuable arms in the blowout on Friday. They should be all systems go on Saturday night.
Padres-Mets Pick
The Mets are a curious case, because it his hard to say that a team that had an almost identical winning percentage in both halves of the season collapsed. However, the fact that they fell out of first place and got swept by their division rivals to be forced into a Wild Card series says a lot.
While the Padres do not seem to have any clear statistical edges on Saturday, the one considerable edge they do have is in win the column. They are still relatively heavy underdogs tomorrow, but this match up seems to be more of a coin flip than the odds would indicate. Take the Padres moneyline as long as it's plus money.
