The San Diego Padres made the long-distance flight to Beantown to open a three-game interleague set with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday night.

The Padres are playing their best baseball of the season after finishing off a 6-1 homestand to move into the last wild-card spot in the National League entering the weekend. The Red Sox have been rolling the past two weeks as well, with victories in 10 of the past 13 games to improve to 43-37 and third place in the American League East. They're just a half-game back for the third AL wild-card spot.

Let's get to my Padres vs Red Sox betting prediction for Friday, June 28.

San Diego Padres

The Padres have climbed back into the playoff race thanks to their recent play at home by winning 11 of the last 13 games at Petco Park, capped off by a three-game sweep of the Nationals.

However, San Diego needs to turn things around on the highway as the Padres are 1-9 in their last 10 road contests with the lone victory coming at Philadelphia in a 5-2 victory on June 19.

The Padres are dealing with a myriad of injuries to its starting rotation with Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove sidelined. Randy Vasquez, who was acquired from the Yankees in the Juan Soto deal last offseason, makes the start in the series opener for San Diego.

In 10 starts this season, Vasquez owns a 2-4 record to go along with a bloated 5.10 ERA as San Diego is 3-7 in those games.

Vasquez is fresh off his first scoreless outing of the season as he tossed five innings in a 6-4 home victory over Milwaukee. That also came on the heels of his worst start in 2024 at Philadelphia by allowing 12 hits and six earned runs in a 9-2 defeat.

We'll see if San Diego can carry its offense on the highway as the Padres hit the Over in all seven games on their recent homestand, while scoring six runs or more six times in this stretch.

In eight of the last 10 games away from Petco Park, the Padres have been limited to three runs or fewer, including scoring four combined runs in the past three road series openers.

Boston Red Sox

Boston hasn't played a full game since Tuesday as Wednesday's series finale against Toronto was cut short early due to rain. That contest against the Blue Jays was suspended and will be continued later this season, as the Sox are coming off a 9-4 loss to Toronto on Tuesday.

That defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for Boston, who erased a 6-2 deficit with five runs in the final two innings in Monday's series openers.

It also was a rare win in that situation for the Red Sox, who have struggled majorly in home series openers this season by posting a 2-10 record.

Nick Pivetta takes the mound for the Sox tonight as Boston seeks a fifth consecutive victory when the right-hander starts.

Pivetta has allowed a pair of home runs in each of his last two outings against the Blue Jays and Reds, each on the road, but Boston managed to erase a 3-0 deficit at Cincinnati last Saturday in a 4-3 victory.

In Pivetta's past two starts at Fenway, he yielded a total of four runs against the Phillies and Braves, while striking out nine in a 9-0 blowout of Atlanta on June 5.

Third baseman Rafael Devers has picked up at least one hit in six of the last home games, including five hits and two home runs in the two games of the Toronto series.

Betting Pick & Prediction

One of these two strong trends will end tonight, either San Diego's road struggles or Boston's inability to win home openers on a consistent basis.

Judging by this line, the Red Sox are the look tonight, especially with Vasquez likely taking a step back following his best start of the season.

Let's take Boston on the run-line to take the opener against San Diego.
