Dead President Picks' Phillies vs Nationals Preview, Prediction

The Phillies aim for an opening weekend sweep today after winning 7-3 in extra innings in Game 1 and following up with an 11-6 victory. Rob Thompson's squad has been a National League powerhouse, reaching the World Series in 2022 and the NLCS in 2023.

Philadelphia remains a contender this season, led by Kyle Schwarber, who has two home runs and four RBIs. Brandon Marsh and Bryce Harper have also contributed offensively, with Harper hitting a home run. Veteran Aaron Nola, who went 14-8 with a 3.57 ERA last season, will start today.

Washington enters the season projected as one of the worst teams in the NL. The Nationals haven't made the playoffs since their 2019 World Series win and have finished fourth or worse in the NL East for five straight years. They will rely on young talent like Dylan Crews, who is still hitless in this series.

Keibert Ruiz has been a bright spot, batting .571 with two home runs, while Nate Lowe has three hits. Left-hander Mitchell Parker, who posted a 7-10 record with a 4.29 ERA last season, will take the mound for Washington.

We’re backing the underdog this afternoon. Nola has struggled in his last two season openers, allowing 11 earned runs combined. The Nationals should be able to generate enough offense to keep this game competitive.

With Nola’s past struggles in season openers and Washington's ability to put up runs, the Nationals have a good chance to cover the spread today.

Pick: Washington Nationals +1.5 (-130) — DraftKings
