Cardinals vs Red Sox Preview & Prediction
Miles Mikolas is a gas can at this stage in his career, eating a lot of innings for the Cards in the back end of their rotation. While his walk rate remains elite, he gives up a ton of hard contact and does not strike out many hitters.
Last season, Mikolas ranked below the 20th percentile amongst all MLB pitchers in hard-hit, whiff, and strikeout rates. His groundball rate was below average, so the contact he relies on is begging for trouble.
However, he does have substantial numbers against the Sox hitters in the past, who are batting .194 against him in 31 plate appearances. It's not too large of a sample size, but it is something to monitor heading into the matchup.
As for the Cards' bats, they draw a nice matchup against Hunter Dobbins, who was knocked around in his last start, allowing 5 ER over 3.2 IP.
It’s tough to project who will be slotted into the lineup after game one of the doubleheaders, but I’ll be looking to target their team total. If the bats aren’t awake for game one, this will be a great betting opportunity to target the Cards.
It’s tough not to like the Sox matchup against the Cards in the nightcap. They have struggled against Mikolas, but he is always subject to allowing a ton of hard contact with the opposition.
The problem with backing the Sox here is that it’s tough to project how Dobbins will do on the mound. There’s nothing special about his recent minor league numbers, and his recent outing suggests that he could be in trouble tonight against the Cardinals' offense.
Rafael Devers homered in game one of the doubleheader, so that could be a massive lift for their offense if he starts to heat up. It’s a premium matchup for the Sox overall, and I think their offense will score many runs tonight.
It’s also worth noting that bullpens could be fatigued from the afternoon's first game, so that would tend to favor the offenses on both sides. I can’t trust the Sox due to their pitching uncertainty, but I like their matchup tonight against Mikolas.
Cardinals vs Red Sox Predictions, Betting Analysis
I love both offenses to hang crooked numbers on the scoreboard tonight. Both teams draw excellent matchups and should cause havoc on the opposition.
I’m not worried about the Sox’s previous appearances against Mikolas, and they should be able to take advantage of his contact-friendly arsenal. I also think the Cards' offense gets a boost with a terrific matchup against Dobbins.
After a lousy afternoon effort from both offenses, I expect them to wake up tonight. I love Over 9 tonight.
